In order to give us enough time to prepare, we began to recruit team member in December last year. After the interview, we formed our own team. After that, we had a series of brainstorming sessions and read a lot of literature and materials, finally, we decided on the project we wanted to do. At the same time, we realized that our projects need to be meaningful to society. Therefore, we did some human practice and investigation.
Survey
In order to test whether people care and pay attention to our project, we conducted some surveys. We designed an online questionnaire about genetically modified and how much the public knows about Rhodiola.Rosea.
Through the investigation, we gained a lot of useful information. According to our survey, 62.7% of people we surveyed support synthetic biology. This makes us very happy and excited. And beyond that, we learned there are 42.3% of people will take transgenic drugs if they are safe. They think that this drugs needs more reliable technology to make it safe to eat. At the same time, there are nearly 40% of people we surveyed heard of Rhodiola.Rosea. It was a very meaningful survey and it helped us build confidence to stick to our project.
Foshan Chancheng Central Hospital
On August 3rd, we went to a hospital in Foshan and made a popularization of science in the hospital. In order to make our presentation play a better role, some team members also went into the hospital to preach to some patients who were interested in our activities. Due to lack of experience, our activity did not go as smoothly as we expected. Nevertheless, we did our best to introduced synthetic biology and transgenosis to the public, reduced social bias against transgenosis, and made synthetic biology more widely known. Through this activity, we have gained more confidence to do well in this project. After all, many people are still very interested in and supportive of our project. Also, we also learned hoe to communicate with others from this human practice.
Stalls in Guangzhou subway station
On August 14th, we set up a stand at the gate of sun yat-sen university subway station to advertise our project to those who are interested in it. It has attracted a lot of attention in the form of a prize contest, and it has well publicized the benefits and function of transgenic technology. With the experience of preaching in the hospital last time, this time our activity went smoothly and well. After this activity, we saw that the public supported us very much and we were all very moved, which also made us more passionate to do our project well and live up to the expectations of the society on us.
The goal of our project is to solve a very meaningful social problem, and we integrate different opinions and concerns into every stage of human practice. In the process of promoting Rhodiola.Rosea and salidroside, we need not only someone to listen to us, but also someone to give us valuable advice. Also, we need someone to support and help us. Therefore, our social practice consists of many parts, such as interview, popularization of science, distribution of leaflets in the community and so on. Our programs can make a significant impact and contribution to society, and over time, our programs will evolve.
Dr.Miao:
When we did the enzyme link for UGT33, we had a huge problem, it was a very difficult step for a high school team, and no one on our team had any experience with it. At this time, Dr.Miao gave us a lot pf help. Under her leadership, we breakthrough the difficulties of UGT33 enzyme linkage. She led us to start our study slowly, encouraging us all the time and enhancing our confidence. After this, she also give some advise “Read the literature more and well, it is very helpful to you. By reading the literature, you’ll be able to learn more, and you’ll be able to learn better how to deal with the various judges’ questions. Seize the time to study during the day, leave the night for the family.”
Miss Huang:
Miss Huang suggested some ways for us to increase the yield of salidroside “In this case, I suggest that the production of salidroside can be increased by switching to some strong promoters or by trying to knock out the bypass genes and downstream genes in the salidroside synthesis pathway.”
Mr. Xu
Mr. Xu also made valuable suggestions for our project. “The establishment of isopolytic expression system of salidroside is of great significance, not only for the production of solidroside, but also for its derived functional products. For example, we can follow the path of astaxanthin rice/golden rice, and extend different foods with salidroside functions, and so on. If we think about the significance of the project, we can consider this aspect.”
