Safety

Overview

Apart from our team protocols, we organized a team safety training prior to experiments in order to ensure all team members are aware of what to do in terms of lab accidents. When it comes to project design, we focused on eliminating the potential risks to our surrounding environments and communities, we chose Risk group I organism E. coli as our host chasses in our study. We also divided our lab area into different section which have different functions and safety levels. We have got a large open bench area to preform low risk level experiments. We also have a few biosafety cabinets and laminar flow hoods to preform aseptic experiments and risky experiments like gel-electrophoresis. Meanwhile, our experienced secondary PI Ruijuan Xiang supervised our entire summer experiments progress to reduce human errors and increase the accuracy of our study. With all the efforts of our team members, we achieved a zero-accident experiment progress during the summer. These safety aspects helped us in acquiring more accurate data and increasing our experiment speed.

Safety in Protocol

Lab Safety Protocol

1. Students with long hair must tie up their hair prior to entering the lab.
2. Slippers, skirt and shorts are strictly prohibited in lab area.
3. Must wear lab jacket and gloves before entering the lab.
4. Wear masks or goggles when necessary.
5. Food and beverages are strictly prohibited in lab area.
6. Do not touch items such as phones and computers with gloves on.
7. Touching lab items with naked skin is strictly prohibited.
8. Do not bring laboratory waste into living quarters.
9. Must be trained before using lab equipment.
10. experiments that hazardous substances are used like gel-electrophoresis must be done inside special marked contamination areas.

Waste Management Protocol

1. Lab waste in the desktop trash cans must be putted into Ziploc bags. When full, seal it tightly and throw it into the Yellow Bio-Hazard waste bin.
2. Used medium plates must be sealed inside a Ziploc bag and throwed into the yellow Bio-Hazard waste bin.
3.Throw express packages and empty glove boxes into the red regular waste bin.
4.Toxic-free salt solutions can be dumped into drain pipes but toxic-organic solution must be dumped in the special bucket.
