Introduction!
Welcome to our team’s wiki page! We are all so glad that you can visit us here. Our team has very few members compared with other ones: only 6 students, a team PI, and an instructor. Also, we are from two different schools, studying three distinct diplomas, and we didn’t even know each other until this competition began. However, it doesn’t mean that our work is weaker. We still work together and overcome numerous challenges. We are fighting all the time! Before introducing all our project, let us have a brief word about ourselves…
【Team main leader】 FANGYUE SHEN (Janet)
Hello, everyone! I’m just a normal high school girl in China. I have a long passion for Biology and almost watch scientific documentaries every day. I thought iGEM would be a challenge to me, and it proved that it promotes my learning ability, leadership, and deeper understanding to science.
Doesn’t it sound too formal? That’s not like me at all. Let’s do it this way…
Hey guys! I’m Janet, a girl with “inconsistent” hobbies. I enjoy staying at home, watching Japanese animations all the day, but also travelling outside to any place. I love classical music, but also share an interest in Rock and Pop. Michael Jackson is the GOD! I deeply believe in science, but also trust superstitions (not religions, just simply superstitions). I hope you can explore our project in a really casual way. Just relax yourself. You’ll definitely love our project when finish!
Team leader: HAOYU JIANG (Justin)
Hey there, this is Justin from team Nanjing. I am just another normal Chinese high school student who has enthusiasm towards Chemistry and Biology. In my mundane life, I am just as self-indulgent as most of my peers do, playing video games, watching animation, and drinking lots of Cola every day. But when it comes to science, especially the IGEM project, I have something more to say. Participating into this game makes me feel more about the application of technology and other issues. How can we drop the long-lasting bias to the GMOs? Maybe the IGEM will give me an answer.
Biology group member: YUNDI XIE (Joyce)
Hi, I am Joyce from Nanjing Jinling High School. My biggest dream is to be a nerd and recite the names of all kinds of strange diseases. I am currently a senior who is struggling with all kinds of applications. I am addicted to my phone and iPad, and I spend most of my time playing games, watching TV shows, and watching soccer games. Real Madrid is my favorite team. Besides, I have a quirk of drawing smiling face on my notebook all the time. Even though they look the same, each of them represents different moods in class (partially because I am so bad at drawing that I don’t know how to draw a different face). One of my favorite jokes is: “What does cell says when its sister step on its toe?” “Mi-to-sis.”
Poster designer: WANNING LI (Wennie)
First let me introduce myself, my name is Wennie.Li, 17 years old, and I study in Nanjing Foreign Language school IB Course. I am open-minded, easy to adapt, compatible with my friends, and willing to help others. I came the IGEM competition because it offers me a chance to develop my abilities. During my study, I have made rapid and great progress in many areas such as art and design. It’s my pleasure to join the team and make effort.
【Wiki designer】ANLAN SUN (Susan)
Hi, I am Susan from Nanjing Foreign Language School. I have plenty of hobbies, but what I like to do the most is painting, handcrafting and taking photos. I love cute things such as soft toys and rabbits. To tell the truth, I’ve got a box of soft toys at home and several on my bed. Sometimes I even make dolls by myself. I am the fan of JK, and he is the cause of my euphoria. I am charged in designing of the website for our group, and this is actually the first time that my design is put into use so I am quite exciting.
LOGO designer: JIAYI SUN (Sunny)
Sun. Jiayi is a Senior 2 student in Nanjing Jinling High School International Department. She takes biology class at school, but she may not takes it as a major in college. She does some art works and propagandistic work in this group. Sun. Jiayi loves sports. She attended triathlon competition once and often go swimming and cycling in the weekends. As a result, she is interested in kinesiology or sports management. She has some pet fish and takes care of them well, but some of them died recently of no reasons. Nanjing is a very beautiful city and she likes her city very much.
Primary PI: Mr.George Owino
Mr. George Owino is our team PI. He is also the Biology teacher in Nanjing Foreign Language School. He loves to make special nicknames for the team members, such as Justin Bieber (that’s Justin). He is extremely patient and helped us build up the bridge between the official and our team. He introduces us with the basic genetic researching techniques, their principles, and the commonly used methods of investigating plants. Applause!
Instructor: LIANG CAO
Mr.LIANG CAO is a doctor in North-Western University in the United States. He is our team’s instructor. During the 5 months in iGEM, he taught us basic research methodology, protocol design, and lab preparation. He also reminded us about the flaws in experiment setups such as the problems with controlled groups. He not only mentored us about the research process, but also helped us contacted with the lab available for us to do the experiment.
LAB Instructor: XUE ZHANG
Miss XUE ZHANG is a graduate student from China Pharmaceutical University studying her year two. She is our lab instructor, teaching us how to use every single experimental apparatus and the safety cautions when doing lab researches. She and other seniors in the lab often discuss the experiment protocol with us, deciding whether we should change the method a little bit in order to increase efficiency and success rate. She stayed us doing the experiment every day, sometimes late in the night. We greatly appreciate her help!
