Safety

Overview

Safety is the most important thing we are concerned about. Every experiment we design complies with the safety and security rules of IGEM competition.

Laboratory Safety

Our Laboratory is provided by Professor. Yang, and is graded as a Biosafety Level 1 lab. Before we enter the lab, all of our members in Wet Lab had passed the Laboratory Training to make sure each member understands the rules, is capable of preventing each other from danger and has the knowledge to avoid spreading our engineered bacteria into the environment.

Project Safety

In our project, we use only BL21 and DH5a as our model organism. They are very common in the lab and are relatively harmless to humans. The gene we cloned into the bacteria is the lipase gene, a common protein for bacteria fat metabolism. Another gene is urease, which often exists in the soil to convert urea into ammonia. Both kinds of proteins are non-toxic and harmless to the environment. Therefore, our products do not cause any disease.

Supervision

Our team is supervised by professor. Yang. We report to Prof. Yang regularly to make sure our experiments are conducted safely and that our lab environment is kept clean. Moreover, there is always at least one senior accompanying us to advise and supervise the experimental process.
