Sixteen high school students from all over the world gathered together in
Shenzhen, a beautiful city which is the start of our tour of synthetic
biology. Nine of us come from Guangdong (G), a province in the South-East
of China. Two are from England(E) and one is from Nanjing (N), a city of
China. Two of our computer programmers and one experimenter are studying in
American high school (A). Our photographer comes from Shanghai (S), an
International metropolis in China. Combing those alphabets together, we got
our team name——GENAS.
We are lucky to have a talented and friendly expert to guide us and give us
crucial instruction and inspiration of our project. Besides, we have an
instructor, a PI, and three advisors to help us with our project. We spent
our whole summer designing and conducting the experiments, and we had
unforgettable and precious memories. Here are some more details about our
lovely team members.
Team members
Leo Zheng
Hello guys, my name is Leo Zheng and I am definitely a superfan of synthesis biology! Synthetic biology renew my understanding of biology and I am sure that I would major in it in college. Besides this, I am a video gamer and sci-fi lover. If you like hearthstone or HOS, please contact me!!!
Li Haoyuan
Greetings. This is another Leo from the same Shenzhen Middle School. My
Chinese name is Li Haoyuan and I like to called myself Leo_Ger (a jingle in
Chemistry, btw) be-cause I’m a great fan in Chemistry and Biology. I’m a person
who will never trembles his hand when using a pipette but will shiver throughout
his body when giving a presentation. As one of the leaders in our team, I’m in
charge of experiment part, and writing two epics on our Wiki: Experiment and Result
(don’t blame on me if they look bad……). Working with a group of exceptional people
is a really lucky thing, hope we can get an epic result!
Li Qianrui
Hello, I am Qianrui Li from Shenzhen Middle School. This was my first time
to be an iGEMer, and so did all of my team members. As a leader of our
team, i was very perplexed about this competition. Fortunately, I got a
bound of lovely and intelligent friends to help me, we overcame all the
difficulty together. From designing to taking part in experiments, and
finally getting a result, I learned the skills of doing research and
experiments. The most important is that I met excellent students who have
the same interest as me and built up a friendship with them. Doing origami
during the free time of our experiments is my favorite.
Wei Chengxing
To whoever sees this page, greetings! My name is Wei Chengxing, 16 years
old, I am a student. I lived in the north of Shenzhen in the ordinary
residential area, unmarried. I study in Shenzhen Middle School. I went to
school until 9:30 PM every day. I went to bed at 11pm and get eight hours
of sleep a day. Before going to bed, I must drink a cup of warm milk, then
do 20 minutes of soft exercise, then I will go to bed and immediately fell
asleep and sleep until dawn. I never leave fatigue and stress until the
next day, the doctors said I'm fine.
Jiayang Li
Hey! I’m Janys Li from Cranbrook Schools, MI. I met my teammates during this summer
in my hometown, Shenzhen. I have a broad range of interests (bio, compsci, art,
snowboard, etc), and every aspect of our team's project was fun working on. :) I learnt so much this season and I had a great time collaborating
with my team. Let’s go GENAS!
Yuxi Long
Hi, I am Jaden from McCallie School, TN. I am the typical nerd you would find.
I like computer science, biology and physics. Janys and I collaborated on making this website.
I also wrote an R code to perform regression on our data.
Hobby wise, I like playing the classical guitar, and recently got into electric guitar.
My favorite classical music piece is the Chaconne by Bach
and my favorite rock song is Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin
(and I play it at guitar stores).
Xiong Yiduo
Hello, I'm Xiong Yiduo from Shenzhen Middle school. I am definitely a synthetic
biology fan and I dream to major in Molecular Biology or Synthetic Biology
in the future. Through iGEM, I learned a lot of things I'm always interested
in. Every discussion, every brainstorm-ing, every experiment, and even every
late night writing wiki was something I really en-joyed. Every moment during
the competition further strengthened my dream and pursuit in the vast universe of biology.
Yuan Ruoqi
Hello, this is Yuan Ruoqi from Shenzhen Middle school. I am a high school student who decide to major in Biochemistry and Medical science. Participating in iGEM provides me with a wonderful opportunity to experience the life of a researcher and lab worker. This is a challenging project but together we make excellent work! I am also a military ethusiast, anime lover and music fan.
Pan Yuqi
I’m a sixteen years old girl who is called Yuqi and now lives in Nanjing.
I’m now in an international school and I want to go abroad when I go to
university. I really like taking videos and edit them into short videos,
and it is one of my favorite hobbies recently. Also, I want to apply for the
media major in university and I want to become a TV director in the future.
Biology is also one of my hobbies and that is the reason why I attended the
iGEM competition. I gain so much pleasure during the time that I worked in
the laboratory and gained so much knowledge about the microorganism. I
would like to be a better me in the next two years of study and life.
Yuqing Yang
Hello, I am Lareina and I am currently studying at SCIE international school in Shenzhen, China. Since my first year in high school, I found out that I am deeply fascinating by the magic of biology and decided to pursue a more in-depth research and study in biology. To achieve this goal, attending competitions and engaging in lab research are probably the ways that I can enrich my experience and knowledge. Participating iGEM competition is one of the most meaningful things I have ever done in my life. I learn so much from my friends and my teammates and instructors. It really shows me a novel path in biology to which I can possibly dedicate my passion and time one day.
Chen Yijia
Here is a girl called Lucy Chen comes from China Shanghai who is interested
in various manga and animations. Speaking academically, I like biology the
most because it introduces nature. The understanding and the concept of
biology are fitted with my cognition. Compare to physics, I can’t agree
with any explanation for movements from my most profound mind. From
biology, I can learn more knowledge I am interested in and agreeable.
Besides the academic aspect, I like manga and its related activities,
including expos and cosplay. Even though I didn’t learn any Japanese, I
could speak most of the language just by watching “tons of animations.”
Ren Yi
I’m Lydia (Ren Yi). I’m an eleventh grader, and I‘m interested in biology.
I do enjoy working with everyone and I can’t wait to see our work finish.
Wang Yiduo
Hi, I’m Linda. I love musicals and paintings, so I’m a kind of artistic
person in daily life who seems to have nothing related to scientific
researches, but the synthetic biology shows me a chance to accomplish a new
creation by our own effort, and it’s fascinating that our project has
chance to be effective and impelling the progress for a more convenient
life or a development of a further technique, so it can be seen as
“scientific art”. Though the process of getting familiar with the subject
and the realization of the ideas is hard and painful, I suppose I still
gain unique experience in the competition and learns a lot from my
teammates. I hope our efforts would not be in vain!
Sacheel Law
Hello, I am Sacheel. I am studying in England. This is the first time for
me to participate in iGEM. I flew to China to meet my team members and did
some experiments with them, and I really enjoy it. By learning more about
synthetic biology, I found that biology was very interesting. Besides, our
team members were humorous and friendly. I was glad that I could spend my
summer with them. I am looking forward to the next time we meet.
Li Jiaming
I am Sunny, as for both my name and personality. I come from Shenzhen, China, and I’m a 10th grader at St.Mark’s School. I enjoy small things in life such as a nice walk in the morning. I am passionate about environment and social sciences. Participating in the iGEM competition has allowed me to learn more about genetic science and to use it for developing new technology. I enjoy being part of the team GENAS as it has very supportive group dynamics.
Gabriel Deng
I’m Gabriel, one of the team members of Genas_China, also a student from
Concord College in the UK. This is my very first year participating iGEM.
For me, iGEM didn’t only allow me to learn a lot of biology, more than
that, it brought me an extremely new view of biology. I used to love
Physics that I thought nothing can be more interesting than it, but then
iGEM appears. I found out that molecular biology is as fun as physics that
enables me to show my creativity. So here I am, in iGEM.
