Public Education in the Sun Yat-Sen Library

In the later August, we designed another public engagement in Sun Yat-sen Library in Guangdong Province. In China, many people don’t consider synthetic biology as a good thing. So we try to make synthetic biology more popular, replace the bad impression of synthetic biology by talking about what synthetic biology is and introduce our project.

At 14:00, all the team members arrived at Sun Yat-sen Library, preparing the coming activity. Half an hour later, the activity began.Team leader Shan Huang started his talking by showing some interesting pictures, attracting audience’s attention. Kids with their parents began to sit around us. Then Huang told what gene is and how synthetic biology works by transferring genes into cells.

Parts of audience seemed suspected. So Huang gave some pieces of examples on daily applications of synthetic biology such as soybean, tomatoes, cotton as well as insulin and answered their questions. At last, Huang introduce our project and made a conclusion as an end. Kids and adults both praised the speech with smile and words. During the activity, besides Huang’s speech, the other members distributed our brochures to the audience.

Through the activity, we had a deeper understanding of synthetic biology and spread our project more widely. We all deemed it meaningful.
