Public Engagement In Hospital

This is our first public engagement, whose subject is to introduce Synthetic biology and our project on Rhodiola rosea to the public, and at the same time appeal to them to avoid misunderstandings and have a more comprehensive understanding. We all feel pleased that we are able to share not only the latest achievements on synthetic biology but also our own progress to the world.

At 9:00, team members gathered at the branch hospital of Foshan Chancheng Central Hospital. After hanging the poster and holding out the leaflets, we called passerbys to listen to our speech. In order to get a better propagandizing effect, some of the members walked into the hospital to preach our project. What is synthetic biology? Are all transgenic products insecure?

Do traditional Chinese medicines useless? What little-known roles can Rhodiola rosea play in defeating diseases? More than half of the listeners said that they can look more scientifically at transgenosis technology. Some even developed great intrest in our project.

Parts of audience seemed suspected. So Huang gave some pieces of examples on daily applications of synthetic biology such as soybean, tomatoes, cotton as well as insulin and answered their questions. At last, Huang introduce our project and made a conclusion as an end. Kids and adults both praised the speech with smile and words. During the activity, besides Huang’s speech, the other members distributed our brochures to the audience.

In the afternoon, we moved to the headquarter of Foshan Chancheng Central Hospital. Firstly we utilize our spare time to come over to a drugstore nearby. With the help of two kind pharmacists, we got a variety of useful information including the market and develop of Rhodiola rosea as a kind of traditional Chinese medicine.

Then, right at 14:00, our mobile propaganda began. Soon a group of young people was attracted by us, most of whom were medical students studying there. After the speech, a big brother raised a meaningful question, “Can genes in Rhodiola rosea be expressed properly in Arabidopsis thaliana?” “As long as you conduct the experiment without mistakes, the genes can be expressed properly.” We answered.

We benefited a great deal when discussing with the listeners. Finally, we all clapped our hands to celebrate that the first public engagement ended in a satisfactory way. Back home, we members did some summary and prepared for the next activity.
