Beaming BioBricks from Space...
Safety
Safe and secure work is a key aspect of our project. All experiments concerning our project involve the use of organisms of the risk group 1, and can be performed in the genetic engineering area of biosafety level 1 at the Biotechnological Center (BIOTEC) of TU Dresden with the registry number 54-8451/160. The detailed safety procedures can be found in our completed Safety Form (here).
POSSIBLE RISKS
The risks mentioned above can be avoided by thoroughly familiarizing ourselves with the basic laboratory safety regulations before proceeding with the laboratory work.
SAFETY TRAINING AND CERTIFICATION
Training
Prior starting to work in the laboratory the safety instructions were carried out by Dr. Frank Gross who is a member of "Epigenetic regulation and genomic engineering" research group headed by Prof. Francis Stewart.
Certification
The experiments conducted by our team were approved by the Institutional Biosafety Committee (Dr. Britta Schiilling), who confirmed that the work involved in our project met all safety requirements for the Biosafety Level 1.
The buccal swab experiment included in our project was discussed with the health
and safety expert Ms. Kuempfel-Conzendorf and confirmed that this experiment is
allowed and does not require the approval of the Landesdirektion or the Ethics
Commitee, if every experimenter is only working with his/her own samples and
contact with the sample material of another experimenter is excluded.
Both of these
requirements have been met by our team members and this was confirmed by the
administrative coordinator of the BIOTEC of TU Dresden, Dr. Dana Schoder and our
lab instructor Dr. Frank Gross.
