Community speech

After conducting our social investigation, we realized that the general public's understanding of cervical cancer and HPVis still just skimming the surface. In order to popularize the knowledge of cervical cancer and HPV vaccinations to the general public, we scheduled a speech in the Ansai community on August 2nd. Since most civilians are not familiar with complicated biology concepts, we carefully chose certain parts of our research that are important for understanding as well as preventing cervical cancer, such as the best age interval that is suitable for vaccination and potential ways which might cause the infection of HPV virus. We believe that these topics will arouse the attention of the general public and enrich their knowledge on cervical cancer as well as HPV. As a supplement to our speech, we also made a informative and vivid slideshow to help the residents understand the content of the speech.

Fortunately, we got to use the projector to present our slides. First, we collected the average age of our listeners, which are all retired people who have already had their grandchild. Interestingly, it wasn't as bad as we thought initially, some of them even heard about HPV vaccination or cervical cancer before. This helps our further explanations. Based on the perspective of keeping their children and grandchild from infecting the virus, they listened carefully and passionately. Later on, we introduced the tendency of infected patients in the past 10 years to inform them the harsh situation today and the importance of early vaccination. Not only have we promoted the conception of the urgent need of women vaccination, but also for men. Then we shared the result of our questionnaire including online survey and discussed policy and price related to vaccination. Moreover, we distinguished the difference between Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in China and America about the standard way of spreading HPV

The residents of the community greatly supported our speech by reacting actively with our speaker and asking meaningful questions concerning the precaution of cervical cancer. We also apply some of the knowledge that we obtained from experts into the speech such as the difference between Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in China and America about the way of spreading HPV virus. At the end of this activity, the audiences claimed that they had a profound morning learning about cervical cancer and HPV vaccines, which will be beneficial to the health of the people around them.

HospitalSpeech(医院宣讲)

Purpose
In order to popularize the overall understanding of the essence of HPV and cervical cancer and their corresponding treatments, we preached related information and the importance of early vaccination in Xuhui Central Hospital, where the target patients are most concentrated. In addition, the purpose of this presentation also included publicity of our efforts and achievements as well as the sharing of the knowledge we gained from the experts and professor. If things go smoothly, we also hope that through these patients we educated, we can greatly increase the public's attention to HPV and cervical cancer, thus enhance their awareness of early vaccination.

Progress

Presenting the poster we made that contain relevant information about how dangerous the HPV is and the importance of a vaccine. Although many people who came to this hospital were in a hurry, many had a basic understanding after talking to us. They also learned what is HPV and what kind of disease could it cause are. During our process of introducing our research topic on HPV, we found there was a common mistake among most the people—HPV vaccines are only necessary for females. In order to eliminate the misunderstanding that deep inside the public’s mind, we convinces the audience that it is also necessary for male to inject HPV vaccine too since they could also be infected with HPV  and more importantly HPV could not only cause cervical cancer but other fatal diseases like pharyngolaryngeal cancer which could happen to both gender. Knowing the community that could gain the most benefits from the HPV vaccine are teenagers, we treated those patients in gynecology and pediatric departments as the target audience. We popularized the elementary education of HPV to those patients and made most of them have a sense of awareness of the severity of HPV.  We also made a larger roll screen beside the gate of the hospital for those who do not have enough time to hear our speech could also have a chance get to know what is HPV and cervical cancer.

Result
After two hours of relentless effort, more patients at the hospital were stopping by our table. (Among the patients who stopped by, for those who have never heard of HPV before, we educated them the danger of HPV and cervical cancer as well as the significance of getting the HPV vaccine. For those who realized the necessity of vaccination, we offered them more information about the vaccine, including its effect, its price, and specific hospitals for where to get vaccinated.) In all, we familiarized the general public with the concept of HPV and encouraged them to get vaccinated by giving them a sense of crisis. Many agreed with us on the urgency of getting HPV vaccination and were willing to share what they've learned today with more people around them, therefore raising the general public's awareness of HPV. Moreover, we urged those who were interested to learn more about HPV to attend our fundraising event on August 6 to support our project.
