Collaborations

Collaboration with team WHU-China

We have carried out in-depth exchanges and cooperation with the WHU-China iGEM team. In the autumn semester of 2019, we held an exchange and sharing meeting with WHU-China iGEM team. At the meeting, both teams fully demonstrated the progress of the project and the problems existing in the current project.
In the course of the communication, WHU-China's students raised the issue of blue light penetration efficiency in our project and whether we could properly maintain the cell state in long term experiments. These valuable suggestions directly led our team to carry out functional validation experiments for cell 3D mass and CCK8 experiments for cell state detection. These suggestions help our team to improve the content of the experiment. The results of the experiment are more rigorous and credible, which makes the rules we master in the experiment more likely to be put into practical application.
During the team communication, we consulted WHU-China about the physical model of lighting system and sampling system. We invited WHU-China's classmates to explain to us the specific structure and biological functions of bacterial cellulose. At the same time, in the process of integrating antimicrobial and antioxidant peptides into bacterial cellulose, we question the efficiency of this molecular biological process and the method of detection and identification. In view of the fact that WHU-China also uses light to express cell products, we have studied and understood the mechanism of light control in this process and related engineering equipment.

Collaboration with team SYSU-Medcine

We visited Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) in this summer and met up with iGEM team SYSU-Medicine. During the meet up, both of the two teams introduced their project to each other and provided meaningful suggestions to troubleshoot the projects. Since team members of SYSU-Medicine are from medical school of SYSU, they are more familiar in experiments treating mammalian cell lines. Hence, we consulted them about efficiency of HeLa cell line transfection, which is unsatisfactory in our own experiments at that time. Their project provides us a good example of applying synthetic biology method into therapeutic and medical use, and it inspired us that our system’s capability of accurate controlling cell behavior also has potential in medical use. We both realized that precise control of dose is vital to protect project safety while maintaining efficacy. Therefore, our light switchable controlling system also provides inspirations to team SYSU-Medicine on precise regulation of dose during their therapeutic process.

Conference of China iGEMer Community(CCIC)

We participated CCiC held in SIAT from August. 19-23. CCiC (Conference of China iGEMer Community) is organized by over sixty Chinese iGEM teams and it offers Chinese iGEMer a platform for idea exchange and resource sharing. During the 4-day conference, we introduced our 'C-hoop' project to over 60 teams all over China, and received meaningful suggestions from other teams. We were very interested in others projects which also involved light control systems. From the projects introduced by THU and SDU, we learned that leakage of gene expression in dark condition can be an important issue for our further improvement of light control regulation systems.

2019 iGEM Southern China Regional Meeting

On May 5, Shenzhen University held 2019 iGEM Southern China Regional Meeting. Four partners participated in this activity. During the lecture, we exchanged projects with many teams and showed our preliminary projects. Most importantly, as a special guest of this conference, Dorothy, the ambassador of iGEM Asia region, shared with us many unique understandings of iGEM competition, as well as iGEM spirit, competition system、process, some key points of HP, etc. At the same time, the guests also provided us with many suggestions on the project. Additionally, we also want to thank Shenzhen University for the souvenirs and free lunches.

Collaboration with team SDU-China

At CCiC, We helped SDU Team complete their third generation hardware. Before the talk,it was hard for them to avoid the mutual interference among the light of LEDs in the plate during the characterization, and could only test one illumination condition for each characterization. For us,we utilized opaque cylinders to control the angle of light emission and used different color filters to control the color of the LEDs in each hole. So we showed the 3D model of our hardware and gave them a detailed introduction to the principles of their hardware design, made some constructive suggestions for their project. We are glad that they could make progress with our help.
