Overview
To build a usable plant database, we focus on what kind of help our project can provide and who it is for. We assume that the primary user are scholars with a professional background in plant research or researchers who want to conduct plant research. At the same time, we hope to promote synthetic biology and plant related knowledge to more students and community residents who have no previous knowledge of them. The dominating part of our work on human practices was to integrate three major themes:
Integrated HP
In the process of project design, we mainly interviewed professors engaged in botany experimental research and deep mining of big data in botany. Through the communication with them, we know what the problems are in the real experimental research and design our project according to them. In the meanwhile, we interviewed a number of PhD researchers and students. We have updated and improved the data from iGEM original plant database.
Public Engagement and Education
Our goal is to inform the public about the basic principles of synthetic biology and its use in botanical research. In July, members of our team went to Eryuan, Yunnan, to introduce the basic knowledge of botany and the significance of synthetic biology in biological research to junior middle school students in Yuhu Middle School. Besides, we have developed a 3D game that contains knowledge of botany and synthetic biology, which is more conducive to the popularization of the project.
Collaboration
The best teamwork means not only the team members in a team, but also the active communication between different teams. During the project development process, we and other teams conducted mutual testing of the software and conducted effective communication. In terms of web design, user experience, and actual needs, other teams have put forward valuable suggestions for us. At the same time, we also started from our own experience and shared the experience with other teams.
