Safety Security
In our project, two bacteria produced suicide protein (BBa_P1010) under blue and green light, respectively. Normally, the bacteria are cultivated in the dark or under specific wavelengths of light. When bacteria are exposed to the sun, the light of various wavelengths within the sunlight will activate the bacterial suicide switch to prevent accidental leakage of bacteria.
Most of the basic parts we use are from the iGEM part library, such as the blue portion from UCAS-CHINA 2018 and the green portion from SDU-CHINA 2018. These parts have been improved and verified by multiple teams, so their safety can be guaranteed.
Only E. coli is used in our experiments. The Escherichia coli we use is TOP10 and DH5α, which means that all the organisms we used in our lab are of group 1 risk. There is no phage or virus in our lab and our lab is of group 2 risk.
Our laboratory is one of the State Key Laboratories of Microbial Technology of Shandong University, and is regulated by schools, colleges, and PI to secure the safety. Every student will receive systematic safety training before entering the laboratory. The areas for experiemnts and relax in the lab are clrerly seperated. All experimental waste are not allowed to be discharged until they have received uniform and harmless treatment. All our experiments strictly follow thw protocol. The PIs will supervise our experiments, and the relevant departments of the school will also inspect the lab incase of the safety issue.
