Overview

    NWU-China team understands the inherent risks of working in the laboratory and is committed to taking all necessary precautions to ensure that no personal or environmental harm is caused. To this end, we have implemented the following security procedures below. Our complete security form can be found here.

Personal protective
1. Protective gloves and safety glasses must be worn when handling infectious, toxic or hot articles.
2. Smoking is strictly prohibited in laboratories.Food, beverages and articles of daily life shall not be brought into the laboratory. It is strictly forbidden to eat or drink in the laboratory.
3. Wash hands with disinfectant before leaving the laboratory, turn off the water and electricity switch, and do a good job of safety inspection.
Safety equipment
Clearly place fire extinguishers, eye washers and other emergency equipment, including fire blankets, fire extinguishers and emergency buttons. Warning signs should be provided for dangerous places, equipment, facilities, articles and technical operations.
Chemical safety
The location and proper storage methods of different types of chemicals in ventilation cabinets, combustible cabinets and general chemical storage cabinets should be marked with warning signs for hazardous chemicals.
Building safety
Familiar with escape routes and emergency evacuation methods in emergencies, keep fire passage open and normal use of safety protection facilities and equipment.
Waste disposal
Biosafety hazardous waste containers, sharp waste disposal containers, high-pressure sterilization methods and leak kits, waste generated in laboratories should be classified according to the requirements and treated separately according to the regulations.

Project Specific Laboratory Safety

    Our project this year involves the basic genetic operation of E.coli DH5α and BL21. According to German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures GmbH, it is defined as the Risk 1 Group with low potential risk. In our wet lab, all the upstream genetic engineering operations, such as transformation, vector expression and protein measurement, are strictly obeyed the regulations and supervised by teachers or postgraduate.
    GeneGreen nucleic acid dye is an oily macromolecule modified based on cyanine.The dye can not penetrate the cell membrane and enter the living cells. It is not easy to volatilize and be inhaled into the human body. The mutagenicity of the dye is much lower than that of EB.
    Considering the risk of bacterial escape, all our engineered bacteria are killed by 75% alcohol.

Training & Enforcenment

   Training: Before starting work in the laboratory, all team members working in the laboratory must complete the complete training of molecular biology experiments under the guidance of laboratory staff and teachers. These courses have set up specific guidelines and are standard requirements for work in the first class laboratories in Shaanxi, China.
   Enforcement: Team members who violate safety rules must work under the supervision of the lab staff until the lab staff believes that the team members are capable of performing tasks without supervision. In cases of repeated violations or complete non-compliance with safety regulations, members are restricted to laboratory work until they are retrained and show full compliance with safety regulations to the test staff.
