--Recycle Formaldehyde for Xylulose Production

Being the top one killer of the chemical pollutants indoors, formaldehyde has been identified as carcinogenic and teratogenic substances by WHO. People know that ventilation is the most effective and cheaper method to remove formaldehyde indoors, however, the eliminating formaldehyde becomes a pollutant again for our environment, which is also waste of resources. If the eliminating formaldehyde can be used for generating a certain valuable substance, that would be optimized!
Embracing this desire, we devoted ourselves to develop a new device to collect formaldehyde indoors, generating a valuable xylulose which is a precusor of some rare sugars, using synthetic biological method.

What is our project?

Two important enzymes benzoylformate decarboxylase mutant (BFD-M7) and transaldolase mutant (TalB-F178Y) are involved in our project. First, formaldehyde is converted to glycolaldehyde by BFD-M7; then formaldehyde and glycolaldehyde are converted to dihydroxyacetone (DHA) by BFD-M7; last, glycolaldehyde and dihydroxyacetone (DHA) are converted to xylulose by TalB-F178Y.

Our project can not only remove formaldehyde indoors, but also generate valuable xylulose with formaldehyde. That kills two birds with one stone!
