Lab safety

Safety training

All teammates were required to attend the laboratory safety training session to realise the potential danger of the equipments and reagents and the points to be aware during experiments. Besides, a workshop about synthetic biology was held for Igem team members to help them master the required skills and techniques in synthetic biology and to ensure them having proper manner in the laboratory.

Clothing

Protective gloves, lab coat and safety goggles were worn in the laboratory.

Waste treatment

Different types of waste were thrown to different place, e.g. broken glassware was disposed to the broken glass bin and the biological waste was autoclaved before disposal. Hands, bench and lab coat were constantly cleaned and sterilised to prevent bacterial contamination.

Disposal

There different kinds of bins for disposal, like autoclaved bag for the biological waste disposal.

Hazardous Chemicals

TEMED and TRIzol are handled in the laboratory. Gloves and safety goggles were worn to avoid contact. Inhalation is prevented by performing experiments in fume hood. Any chemical transfer is performed carefully without static sparks. Chemicals are tightly capped and stored at 4oC. Liquid is collected in appropriate container and disposed by suitable protocol.
