Safety
Safe project
- We decided to use Yarrowia lipolytica A101 yeast (GRAS status) and Escherichia coli DH5-Alpha. Both organisms are not dangerous to humans.
- We worked in step with rigorous safety protocols for use of biological organisms.
- Our project complies with iGEM's safety and security rules and policies.
Safety in Lab
- We followed the good hygene practices (e.g disinfection and sterilization, separate garbage bins for contaminated waste that is autoclaved before disposal).
- We received safety training (e.g good microbial technique, physical biosecurity, personnel biosecurity, chemicals, fire and electrical safety).
- Biosafety level 1 laboratory.
- We worked under the sterile laminar chamber using gloves and safety glasses when interacting with living oranisms.
Application safety issues
- The genes which was implemented into Yarrowia lipolytica are commonly found in nature and do not encode any toxins or potentially harmful proteins.
- No safety, ethical and security risks.
- Ensuring that filters will be used correctly - they will also be recycled! :)
