Meetings

During our iGEM journey, we had a pleasure to meet a lot of interesting and inspiring people and found some new friends. Below you can read about some of them!

New friend from Russia!

On 12 and 13 July of 2019 we had the pleasure to host IGEM Moscov leader Julie Kacher in Wroclaw. We spent time mainly on visiting the most interesting places in our city and we exchanged experiences related to the IGEM. We have touched on a variety of topics related to our project and the project of colleagues from Moscow. We have had discussions about synthetic biology and how this field of science is needed in experimental science and what benefits it can bring. There was also time to talk about our interests. In general, we spent this time in a nice atmosphere. Hopefully there will be more of such positive meetings! Click on the polaroid to see the full gallery.

Visit of the Dean Robert Kolvoord,PhD

On the 12th of June we had an honour to met professor Robert Kolvoord,PhD, Dean of College of Integrated Science and Engineering (James Madison university), who alongside with professor Tomasz Arciszewski, PhD, from George Madison University, visited our University.

Wroclaw University of Environmental and Life Sciences organised a small contest, in which contestants from various student associations were presenting their research projects in PechaKucha formula. Our project was presented by Jagoda. We didn't win, but it was very enriching experience and good training before the Giant Jamboree in Boston!

iGEM Spring Festival in Bonn

Between 2nd and 5th May of 2019, we participated in the iGEM Spring Festival organized by iGEM Team Bonn. We decided to get to Bonn from Wrocław by car. The trip was tiring but after ten hours we got there. We only dreamed about eating and resting.

The first day began with greeting everyone and discussing organizational matters. This day was devoted to getting to know each other more. We could talk to representatives of companies such as Promega, Doulix and Starstedt this day. We also got a lot of gadgets from this companies.

Saturday was the main day of the event. The first half of the day was scheduled for lectures. They were very interesting and thought-provoking, and we learned a lot from them. They covered topics such as „optogenetics and aptamers”, „clinical research”, “stem cells”, „revival of the wolly mammoth”. After the lectures there was a time for a lunch break, followed by workshops and a poster session. The workshops overlapped, so we divided up to be able to participate in most of them:

  • Ethics Debate: Designer DNA/CRISPR Babies
  • Panel Discussion with industry and academia
  • Exploiting Al. To streamline a SynBio workflow: a hands on tutorial by Doulix
  • MEMEology
After all classes, the day at the congress center ended. However, it was not the end of attractions. There were Panama Festival in Bonn at the same time, so we spend a nice time together with other teams.

  • May 5th.

Last day. For us it was short due to the fact that we wanted to leave earlier to return to our country. After eating breakfast, we went to "Brain and behavior" and "Innate immunity" lectures. When the lectures were over we took souvenir photos, and then, sad to leave but full of new experiences, we returned to Poland.
