Rules of the game

This card game includes four kinds of cards: promoter (red), transcription factor (yellow), operon (blue), expressed gene (green). There are “10+8” cards in each category, 10 of which are numbers 1 to 10, and the remaining 8 are the four functional cards meaning genetic variation (black) (gene shift, gene deletion, gene replacement, gene insertion).

ACTION CARDS

1. Substitution: Exchange two players’ card.

2. Translocation: The next player’s turn is skipped.

3. Deletion: The player shall play one more card regardless of the top card of the discard besides deletion card.

4. Insertion: The next player must draw 2 cards AND loses their turn.

Set-Up Stage

Objective: Play all your cards first.

Number of players: 4-6 players

Each player gets 6 cards, which are dealt one at a time and face-down. The remaining cards form a draw pile placed in the center. The game starts as soon as a card is placed on the discard pile.

Play Stage

Discarding

A player is appointed to start the game and play moves clockwise. Players examine their card and try to match the top card of the discard. Cards are matched by identification (following the order of promoter, enhancer, transcription factor and gene), number, or action (substitution, translocation, deletion, insertion). For example, if the top card of the discard is a promoter 3, the next player has the option of playing any enhancer card or card of any identification with a 3. If players fail to match, they must draw from the draw pile and the play moves to the next person. Players can still play the card, If the card drawn is matched.

NOTE

If the first card flipped from the draw to the discard (which initiates the game) is an action card, the action must be done. If the draw pile is exhausted, remove the top card from the discard. Shuffle the discard thoroughly and it will be the new draw pile, continue playing on the single card from the discard as normal.

Ending the Game

Play continues until a player has no card.

Scoring

When the game ends the winner receives points. All their opponents’ cards are collected, given to the winner, and points are calculated.

Number Cards: face value

Action Cards: 20 points

The first player to reach 500 points – or whatever the mutually agreed upon target score is – is the overall winner.
