TEAM ROUTINE
SCU-China usually consists of over 30 team members, which is a big family. Most of the students in our team are freshmen and sophomores, a little of students are juniors. The pyramid structure of SCU-China is very special compared with most iGEM team. That’s because SCU-China is not just aimed for success in competition, but also an education organization try to open the door of synthetic biology for students. Every year, freshmen join our team and get training from the juniors and sophomore. In the next year, most of them will stay in the team, continuing to learn and improve themselves. In the third year, a few of them will stay and become the leaders of the team.
We established the 2019 new team in the December 2018, just after the 2018 giant jamboree. Before the end of 2018, we held a team meeting to welcome our new team members. And then, the winter vacation brought in the winter training.
On the purpose of giving more suggestions and feedback to the participating teams, several professors with rich knowledge of synthetic biology and student representatives with many years of experience in iGEM competitions were invited to serve as judges.
After the winter vacation, the 2019 spring semester came. In the spring semester, we had a team meeting every week. Students in groups were given former team wikis to read, then presented it on the team meeting. This is another traditional SCU-China activity in the spring semester. Students could have a deeper understanding of synthetic biology through reading excellent former team wikis and sharing opinions with others. At the same time, the junior team members were working on the improvement and optimization of 2019 project. We read related articles and asked help for experts such as professor Wang. In May, we attended the China iGEM Southwest Union (iSWU) and presented our unaccomplished project. We received many precious suggestions to make our project better.
We started the experiment in the end of June. At that time, the design of our project had finished. The experiment would last till the October wiki freeze. The students were divided into groups and each group had a goal and direction in experiment. We did HP during the whole 2019 competition season, but most of HP works were finished in the summer vacation. And at the end of August, we attended the Conference of China iGEMer Community (CCiC). CCiC is an excellent opportunity for us to communicate with other iGEMers and improve our project.
We finished the most of wiki work within the early October. But the alteration and adjusting of the webpage would continue till the wiki freeze.
