CHINA iGEM SOUTHWEST MEETING

From 3rd May 2019 to 4th May 2019, we met up with UESTC-China, UESTC-Software, BM-AMU, XJTU-China and SICAU-iGEM in the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China.

This meeting began with the lecture addressed by iGEM Asian Ambassador, Nan Zhang. She shared us with the change of rules for the awards and introduced the "After iGEM" project to us. She emphasized that taking part in iGEM is not only an experience of competition but a part of the development of synthetic biology. In the end, she pointed out the scientificity of Human Practice, which was usually ignored by most of the teams.

Nan Zhang also gave many advice in the presentation section. Her lecture and advice made us reexamine our design of Human Practice. We found that our formulation of Human Practice was short of what can our project bring to society, and how the does society influence our project. In the last formulation, we investigated the industry’s background and designed a commercial plan for the full commercial value of our product. Meanwhile, we designed and analyzed our questionnaire survey scientifically.

After this, every team introduced their projects and discussed the problems and advantages of every project in the poster section.

We found some defects of our project and presentation and considered them in detail after this activity. Meanwhile, we gave some advice to BM-AMU, and pointed out an inconsiderate point in UESTC-China’s project. We discussed the relationship between BM-AMU’s project and synthetic biology, and how to detect the off-target effects as well.
For UESTC-China’s project, we pointed out that it’s important to design self-kill system considerably because wild bacteria could gain plasmids with resistance if they just killed engineering strain with lysozyme.
