We have a Bio-Safety Committee at our college. It consists of four Professors from our department who are experts in the field of Genetic engineering and Microbiology. They conduct periodical inspections of our lab and record the reports of the same to ensure that the safety rules are followed and corrective actions are taken when in-need. In order to maintain the laboratory free of contamination, we are strictly trained to treat all microbes as potential pathogens. At the beginning and at the end of each lab session, the bench-tops are cleaned with disinfectants. No animals, except ones under experimentation, are permitted into the lab. Contaminated loops and instruments are sterilized as advised. All cultures and materials are decontaminated and placed in the disposal area for proper disposal.
Students can work in the laboratory only during working hours in the presence of trained lab instructors. If we must carry out any work post working hours, we are expected to seek prior permission from the respective professor in advance. Accidents, if any, are immediately reported to the Bio-Safety Committee.
