Plant Synthetic Biology
Plants in a hypothetical colonization of Mars could provide oxygen, fresh food, and even medicine to astronauts but Mars has an environment that is harsh for life. In this context plants will need to be adapted to this adverse conditions. In this process synthetic biology will enable plants to thrive in Martian growth conditions.
Our project use synthetic biology to develop plants with new capacities to be used in space trips or in a permanent colonization of Mars. The team Navarra_BG has designed plants stably transformed that can produce any protein of interest and a method for a simple and cost effective purification of these proteins (see “Our strategy for recombinant protein purification” section). For our team is very important to go further in developing new capacities to our plants and we will use plant synthetic biology for this purpose (see “Part improvement” section).
