The NYU Shanghai iGEM Team is filled with exceptional individuals from China, the United States and Japan who are united by their passion for synthetic biology. Influenced by different cultural and educational backgrounds, our team members have learned from each other daily and combined our strengths to pursue our research. Daisy Bugarin | 柏得熙

Class of 2021

A Chicago-native, Daisy is a junior majoring in economics. She joined the team because she believes the skills you learn in iGEM are applicable to most disciplines. Her favorite part of being on the team is being part of a community of individuals who are passionate about making the world a better place.

Yuma Kanazawa | 金沢優真

Class of 2021

Yuma is from Kyoto, Japan and hopes to follow in his grandfather and mother's footsteps by pursuing biology research. As a junior neuroscience major, he hopes to apply his experience working with our PI (Professor Kang) to our iGEM project. His other passions include soccer, basketball, and motorsports (especially Formula One)!

Hermit Peng | 彭绍庭

Class of 2021

A Beijing native, Hermit is a junior chemistry major. He was drawn to the iGEM team because it gives him a chance to follow his passions and collaborate with friends that share a similar interest in biology and science. Fun Fact? “I am a long-haired boy, so I constantly get mistaken for a girl hahaha.”

Sally Dong | 董淑欣

Class of 2021

Sally is a junior biology-business double major from Hangzhou, China. Her passion for biology led her to the iGEM team. Fun fact about her: she is a GYM Girl! When she’s not in the lab or updating the team budget sheet, you can find her in the fitness center.

Yexi Wang | 王叶希

Class of 2022

Yexi was born in Tokyo, Japan but raised in Shanghai. She is a sophomore business and finance major who joined the iGEM team to gain a different perspective from a new field. A member of this year's outreach team, she will be the President of Outreach for the 2020 team. In her free time, she vlogs!

Sichen Zhu | 朱斯辰

Class of 2022

Sichen was born in Jiangsu, China and is currently a sophomore at NYU Shanghai. She is currently majoring in mathematics, but is interested in a future in medicine. Sichen will be the President of Research for the 2020 NYUSH iGEM team. Why did she join the iGEM team initially? “I really wanted the experience, and I also just like trying new things”.

Jialu Li | 李佳璐

Class of 2022

Jialu is a sophomore neuroscience major from Suzhou, China. She initially joined the iGEM team because it is a great opportunity to learn how to design and carry out research, plan and host events and cooperate with others. iGEM has allowed her to come up with interesting ideas and put in the effort to make them a reality. Aside from research, she loves Jazz dance.

Andrew Du | 杜木子

Class of 2021

Andrew was born in Jinan, China. Initially, he joined the iGEM team for the opportunity to build friendships, and gain research experience. He is currently active on the Shanghai team while also doing research at the New York campus. When he is not in the lab, he likes to watch movies or listen to music.

Jessie Zhang | 张茜

Class of 2021

A New York native, Jessie is a junior biology major. When she first heard of iGEM, she was drawn to the notion of student-led research. She’s enjoyed being heavily involved in the research process this year, calling it a “rewarding process”. Aside from research, she loves learning about different cultures and languages.

Siyi Chen | 陈思怡

Class of 2022

Siyi is a sophomore biology major. A local Shanghai-native, she joined the iGEM team because she enjoys working in a team and is interested in genetic engineering. Her short-term goal is to be really good at typing. “I have been addicted to TypeRacer for a semester but my typing hasn’t improved at all!”

Tiger Lei | 雷永宁

Class of 2021

All the way from Xiangyang, China, Tiger is a junior neuroscience major who loves making his teammates smile. He likes being involved with the members of our team and enjoys learning through hands-on research. His message to the world? “Emm.. I am a happy guy :)”

Jenny Li

Class of 2021

Also an NYC native, Jenny is a junior neuroscience major. iGEM has been an opportunity for her to apply what she learns in the classroom to tackle real-world problems. Joining the team has allowed her to hone her critical thinking skills. Fun fact about Jenny: she inserts herself in front of a karaoke mic whenever she gets the chance.

Frank Bu | 布一凡

Class of 2022

Frank is a sophomore physics major from Shijiazhuang, China. His interest in organisms and their interaction with the natural world brought him to the NYUSH iGEM team. In his free time, he enjoys photography- he was also our designated photographer for the Shanghai Regional Conference.

Jungseog Kang | 강정석

Assistant Professor of Biology

Professor Kang is originally from Taegu, South Korea. He holds a PhD from UT Austin and specializes in chromosome segregation, mitosis, and antimitotic cancer drug screening. This is the fourth year Professor Kang has served as the NYUSH iGEM PI.

Wenshu Li | 李文姝

Associate Professor of Biology

From Changchun, China, Professor Li holds a PhD from State Key Laboratory of Genetic Engineering at Fudan University. Her research focuses on cancer biology and stem cell biology. Professor Li has served as NYUSH iGEM PI for four years.
