Outreach and Public Engagement
Agility
We presented at the Agility pitch competition on our research in an Entrepreneurial environment. The Agility pitch competition is a yearly event hosted by the University of Lethbridge, the Management Department and Agility program in an attempt to enrich and fund new innovative ideas in the community. This allowed us to understand how the Entrepreneurial world works and to develop a global insulin analysis market for our projects Algulin. This also gave us an opportunity to present and receive feedback from community members and faculty of the management department and Agility program.
RNA Day
We presented at RNA Day where we discussed our project, current treatment of diabetes and issues with diabetes management. RNA Day is a yearly event that is hosted by the University of Lethbridge where researchers can present their work and interact with the public. This gave us an opportunity to present and receive feedback from community members and faculty from the Alberta RNA Research and Training Institute (ARRTI) located at the University of Lethbridge.
Big Bang Weekend
The University of Lethbridge hosted the Big Bang event for the Grand Opening of the new Science Commons, where we had a table. We were able to engage with community members on a personal level while we answered their questions about our project and synthetic biology. This piqued people’s interest in our project and provided us with valuable feedback and their thoughts on our project.
aGEM
Our team competed in the Alberta Genetically Engineered Machines (aGEM) competition hosted by GeekStarter and MindFuel. We competed alongside the University of Calgary and The University of Alberta. This gave us an opportunity to present our project and receive feedback from judges. We were awarded a $2000 project award as well as the Most Entrepreneurial.
Chinook Symposium
This was the third year that we were part of the 13th Annual Chinook Symposium. This is hosted by the University of Lethbride’s Chemistry and Biochemistry Department. This symposium allows for local undergrad and graduate researchers to present posters on their research. This gave us an opportunity to present our project and raise awareness about iGEM.
