Our project idea started with the idea of bioproducing indigo dye due to its popularity and usage. Since a lot of work had been done on this specific dye, we decided to choose a more local dye plant, safflower, which produces the dye natural red-26. The dye is used in food coloring and textiles. In Pakistani industry, a lot of synthetic dyes are preferred due to cheap cost and quick production. These synthetic dyes cause a lot of side waste products which pollute the environment and the dyes themselves are not very reliable to human health. With the production of synthetic safflower dye, we aimed to cut down on these side effects, and provide a natural alternative.
