Education and Public Engagement
During our exploration of antibiotic pollution, there are two things that our society need urgently. Except that a strictly principle involves antibiotics using released by the authorities, ordinary people also can play an important role in antibiotics control. People can help tackle antibiotic resistance in some aspects like using antibiotics only when needed (following prescriptions) or never sharing antibiotics with others. According to our public survey, we found that it is necessary to share the information we got to ordinary people. Besides, there are fewer people around us who have such a good chance to make antibiotics remove project not to mention to know what synthetic biology is. So we organized public events at Hangzhou Low carbon science and technology museum China and Zhejiang University during this summer in order to draw public attention about daily antibiotics use and attract more talented individuals to the field of synthetic biology & bioengineering.
Public Activities
We organized a public event with Worldshaper-Shanghai, ZJU-China, Worldshaper-XSHS, HZNFHS_Hangzhou, and XHD-WS-B at Hangzhou Low Carbon Science and Technology Museum China. At that time, a theme speech of antibiotics pollution and our project attracted a lot of teenagers and their families, they were very attentive during our speech and wanted to learn more about our project and synthetic biology. We also teached over 100 teens biology such as molecule structure and extracting DNA from fruits in workshops, which is the most popular part of our events.
Sharing Lecture
Besides, we brought out a lecture about our project and synthetic biology to a group of summer camp students at Zhejiang University. It is a great honor for us to exchange ideas with them. The good feedback encouraged us a lot and we found that the people we met were very interested in our project, they expect the good news of our project. Also, we convinced that we had aroused their interest in synthetic biology.
Self-media platform operation
Moreover, in order to share our experiences of attending iGEM and public education, we publicized our project and researching processes in social platforms (WeChat, Tweeter, Weibo) to over thousands of individuals, which is extremely appealing.
