Demonstrate

This summer, we have achieved in construction and function verification in Mec detective system and the blaCMY-10 degradation system. But we want to do something meaningful and practical. Thus, according to the results of the experiments and human practices, antibiotic pollution detection and elimination system has been designed to used in a large wastewater treatment system especially somewhere can not remove antibiotics fully. Another point is that our equipment could be installed at the drainage outlet of wastewater treatment facilities, hospitals, and farms, in that case the β-lactams in wastewater will be cleaned up in time.

The working principle and design ideas are as follows:

Our equipment is divided into two cisterns: the detection cistern (Cistern 1) contains our detective biosensor and guiding polluted wastewater flow into downstream cistern (Cistern 2) for β-lactams removing, the treated water won’t be released until it up to standard. The simple principle is like this:

The primitive unfiltered wastewater would stay in Cistern 1, undergoing the detective system and resting on this pool.

If there are β-lactam contaminants detected, the water will be transferred to Cistern 2; if there is not, these liquid would be directly discharged or sent to the next stage of processing.

The wastewater in Cistern 2 will not flow until the degrading completion. Afterward, this wastewater is going to be re-inspected and staying in Cistern 2 for further degradation.

If wastewater is going to be remained in Cistern 2, initiating another circulation, no more new unfiltered wastewater would income.

The graph below has shown this practical utilization accurately. Please go to the Applied Design page for the details.

Figure 1 Applied Design

To test the degradation efficiency of blaCMY-10 protein, a pre-test experiment had been done on the color reaction of alkaline cupric tartrate solution (the solution change to blue when mixed with β-lactams). As shown in Figure 2, when the simulated sewage containing 1 mg/mL Ampicillin, Cephalothin, Cefoxitin was treating with blaCMY-10 protein after 15 minutes, the value of OD310 is decreased. Based on this pre-test results, it is initially proven our blaCMY-10 degradation system is a promising way to degrade excess antibiotics in the environment.
