On July 7th of 2019, our team, iBowu China along with team SDSZ_China successfully held the 2019 iGEM Beijing District Meeting at Songshan Art Zone. Our team first initiated the idea of this meetup around March, when we realized that there weren’t any existing high school iGEM meetups in Beijing. Therefore, we decided to build our own platform for ourselves as well as many other high school teams to gather together and share our thoughts, worries, experiences, ideas and etc.

The planning stage was a bit overwhelming for us at the very beginning, since being a new team in the iGEM competition, we didn’t have as much as resources as the older teams had. But through the influence of social media, the close communications with our co-host team and the mindset of launching the best opportunity for Beijing high school iGEMers, we were able to establish the entire event on time with large amounts of participation.

Originally, as mentioned above, this meetup was an occasion facing the high school iGEMers at Beijing, however after displaying the meet up information on the iGEM website, as well as Chinese social media platform, we got numerous additional participations from unexpected backgrounds. In total, 11 teams participated in this meeting, which consists of 8 high school teams and 3 university teams from Beijing, Wuxi and Shanghai. All the teams had the opportunity to present their projects, learn new knowledge, deliver concerns as well as seek for collaborations and sponsorships during the conference. Some of the teams including us entered iGEM for the very first time, thus, this forum gave us the best occasion to learn from the previous participators. Furthermore, we were very lucky to have the iGEM Asia Ambassador, Ms. Zhangnan along with the After iGEM High School Committee chair Jeff Hu to introduce us to After iGEM as well as giving each group feedbacks after their presentations for further improvements.
