*Gel fails miserably* "That's a sassy ladder tho"

Favorite Lab Instrument:

"The benchtop centrifuge because reasons"

Bio:

Hi, my name is Jessica Lee and I am a third year Biochemistry and Molecular Biology major. After graduation, I plan to work in the biotechnology industry on cellular agriculture related projects. Outside of the lab, I enjoy riding horses, watching Netflix, and baking.

Yan Yi Chen

late night lab squad 2k19 | 2019 Graduate

Quote:

Yan Yi: "Wait, don't get the cells ready yet! I have to dye first!"

Beth: Oh no

Favorite Lab Instrument:

"The -80 freezer because it is the coolest"

Bio:

Hello! I am Yan Yi, and I recently graduated with a bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering. I am currently looking for a research associate position in translational medicine and therapeutics. In my spare time, I enjoy watching asian dramas and sleeping.

Omar El-Fahmawi

Team Fisherman | 4th Year

Quote:

*loud bang* Omar: "Did anyone die?" (NO, we're good!)

Omar: "Good, we don't have time for death right now"

Favorite Lab Instrument:

"The UV light table for gel extractions because it’s lit"

Bio:

Hello my name is Omar El-Fahmawi and I’m a fourth year Biological Sciences Major. After graduation I hope to find work in the biotech industry and I also plan on eventually pursuing graduate school in the future. When I’m not in lab I enjoy fishing, backpacking, and cooking.

Jodie Jacobs

All hail the diagram goddess | 4th Year

Quote:

"Opentrons rearranged spells "not person"

Favorite Lab Instrument:

The Nano-drop, because it's magic.

Bio:

I am a fourth year student studying Genetics and Genomics. I’m excited about the future applications of genetic engineering in personalized medicine and manufacturing. After graduation, I aim to begin my career in genetic engineering and work in biotechnology. I plan on eventually pursuing a PhD in Synthetic Biology to build the knowledge base of the scientific community.

Elizabeth Moore

Birthday Girl | 4th Year

Quote:

*regarding iGEM* "We will look back on this time with great fondness but also great joy that we can finally sleep again"

Favorite Lab Instrument:

"The large gel electrophoresis machine because verifying qPCR primers goes a lot faster when you can do 100-wells at a time"

Bio:

Hi! My name is Beth Moore and I’m a fourth year Microbiology and Molecular Genetics Major. After graduation I plan to take a year off before entering a Phd. program gaining experience in industry research with biopharmaceuticals and immunology, and finding answers to interesting questions. In my free time I enjoy painting, hiking, and watching movies.

Andrew Wood

Sock Enthusiast| 3rd Year

Quote:

“Woah! The cells are in sicko mode!”

Favorite Lab Instrument:

"The manual serological pipettes because they are reliable as heck!"

Bio:

I am a third year Genetics and Genomics major with a strong interest for understanding all things unknown to the science community. In the near future, and after graduation, I envision myself working in industry for a short time before returning to graduate school. However, in the distant future, I plan to be researching in the field of mammalian genetics and eventually teaching at a university. When I am not neck-deep in a transfection, I enjoy backpacking, abalone diving, and cooking for myself and others!

Meet Our Advisors

Marc Facciotti

Project Advisor | Associate Professor

Favorite Lab Instrument: "My 'lucky' forceps - they’ve been with me since before graduate school."

Research Interests

Our laboratory is interested in understanding how structures and dynamics of gene regulatory networks have evolved to regulate complex phenotypes. We focus primarily on microbial systems due to the relative simplicity of microbial genomes, which allow us to interrogate complex processes across a wide range of levels of cellular complexity (e.g. from single proteins to comprehensive systems-level analysis). We aim to develop tools that will allow the rational engineering of gene regulatory networks at both the protein and network-structure levels, and have application across species boundaries.

Andrew Yao

"Uncle A" | Molecular Prototyping and BioInnovation Lab Manager

Favorite Lab Instrument: "Microscopes, because normally with cell biology you can’t ever see anything you’re working with"

Research Interests

Andrew Yao was the lab manager of the Molecular Prototyping and BioInnovation Lab (MPBIL). Along with Dr. Facciotti, he check up on our progress weekly. He advised us on all aspects of wet-lab, provided us with protocols, and helped troubleshoot experiments gone wrong. In terms of dry lab, helped us lasercut the gaskets for the light box. Furthermore, he ordered our materials, organized flights to Boston, and provided emotional support during our times of need.
