Collaborations

Introduction

What does collaboration mean?

To us, collaboration means team work. Through meet-ups (both in-person and virtual) collaborations allowed our team the opportunity to talk to others, share ideas, ask questions, and problem solve. Collaborations with other iGEM teams are one of our favorite aspects of iGEM because they constitute two core values of iGEM, cooperation and respect. Our collaborations fostered a positive and encouraging environment.

Brown Stanford Princeton

We organized a meetup in Santa Cruz with the Brown-Stanford-Princeton 2019 iGEM team . We presented our projects to each other in preparation for the iGEM jamboree in Boston. The meetup was another opportunity to practice explaining our project. After each presentation, We provided feedback on the presentation, content of the project, and stage presence. We also had a Q&A session. We asked questions about the challenges each team faced and how they overcame those challenges. This furthered our discussions about human practices and the ethics of our projects. This collaboration provided meaningful insight about which aspects of our project can be improved and how we can implement those improvements.

Vienna

The Vienna 2019 iGEM team challenged our team to write a six-page story about our project that is geared toward all audiences. Our story will be assembled in a booklet that will tell the story of as many 2019 iGEM projects as possible. The purpose of this challenge was to practice communicating our project to the public. We want people of all ages to understand the meaning of our project. Our main character was Violet the Vaccine. We made our vaccine a superhero who has the power to turn into gelatin when exposed to extreme heat. The story discusses how she can help save lives with her “superpower.” Through this collaboration, we hope the public will gain a better understanding of all aspects and applications of our project. This collaboration was a great way to spread awareness of different scientific research projects.
