UA_Huntsville iGEM Team 2019

Jonathan Kilroy

Jonathan Kilroy is a graduate student majoring in Biological Sciences who graduated earlier this year with bachelor’s degrees in both Biological Sciences and Chemistry from UAH. As graduate advisor to the UAH iGEM team, he provides both administrative support and experimental design input for the team. Jonathan works as a graduate teaching assistant for cell and developmental biology. His master’s thesis project consists of designing a bioreactor capable of housing a continuous bacterial culture that converts bio-diesel waste into a fuel additive. He intends to pursue a PhD in microbiology or biomedical sciences starting next year. Beyond the lab, he serves as President of the Life Science Graduate Student Association and is a member of Tribeta Chapter at UAH. His hobbies include hiking and swing dancing.

Emily Hartselle

Emily Hartsell recently graduated from the Biological Sciences department at UAH. Her research interests are primarily related to human health. She joined the UA_Huntsville iGEM team to work with a great group and become part of the international research community. She is currently working at a biotech startup developing an RNA based rapid medical diagnostic device. She plans to continue her education and eventually become a physician working in academic medicine. In her free time she likes hiking, cycling, kayaking, and practicing hot yoga. She also paints in watercolor and acrylics.

JP Henry

JP Henry is a senior majoring in Biology with a concentration in Microbiology. He joined the UAH iGEM team to gain wet-lab experience and see what research has to offer. He also wanted an opportunity to join more school organizations. With graduation coming soon, and with his experiences at the UAH Chemistry Stockroom and Vivarium, he desires a career in clinical laboratory sciences. JP enjoys hiking and watching sports in his free time.

Joseph Noble

Joseph Noble is a senior majoring in Biological Sciences and Chemistry. He and several other members started and joined the UAH iGEM team to both expand the accessibility of wet-lab work to undergraduate students, and gain more experience in conducting research. Soon to graduate, he hopes to pursue options which would allow for a career in translational medical research. With unfortunately little time for hobbies, Joseph is involved in ribosome research, UAH Biological Society, and the UAH College Democrats, and serves as a Teaching Assistant and PASS leader.

Sharee Riggs

Sharee Riggs is a sophomore undergraduate student majoring in Biological Sciences with chemistry and technical writing minors. She joined iGEM to further expand her wet lab experience and to be a part of a new collaborative team at UAH. Sharee aims to complete her undergraduate studies and continue on to graduate school later on to pursue herpetology or nutrition/medical sciences. She serves as secretary for the team and is involved in the UAH Biological Society and Cru alongside her alternative insect protein research. Her hobbies include marital arts and hiking.

Dr. Tanya Sysoeva

Dr. Tanya Sysoeva is a professor of microbiology at UAH. She was kind enough to serve as our primary faculty advisor for iGEM. Dr. Sysoeva has provided support for the research, both in design and implementation. She has been instrumental in helping us secure funding and setup official communications channels. Her research is focused on horizontal gene transfer.

Dr. Roy Magnuson

Dr. Magnuson is a professor of immunology and microbiology at UAH. He was kind enough to let us use his lab space as well as a myriad of other resources for this project. Always quick with a challenging question, Dr. Magnuson has challenged us to think critically on this project. His research specialty is plasmid-host interactions.
