Survey

Do you know about AMP (Antimicrobial peptide) ?

Our human practices work began with a public survey to investigate the issues people know the extent of the AMP. The outcome of this investigation indicates that people know rarely about antimicrobial peptide. Through the public engagement, we propaganda the knowledge about the advantage of peptide which can replace antibiotic.

As soon as we made the decision to investigate the knowledge of AMPs, we sure to approach human practices in two ways:
  1. Establishing science camp and other formula to let people know more about the utilization of antimicrobial peptide around our life.
  2. Approaching the general public to address their concerns with synthetic biology and its use to genetically engineer organisms to make the world better.

Public

We aim to pin point what AMPs (antimicrobial peptide) application is about and also to clarify the myths that most people misunderstood about it. Our article is written by our mother tongue that makes people more understand about biology and make the project more clarify to the public. Besides, we can receive tons of feedback from the broad world of the internet. In addition, we make a video on YouTube to introduce our project more easily and interesting to the people who are interested in our project. From the viewer point of view, they said that the article is cheer and bright.

Public Engangement & Education

On July 23,we host a one-day environmental protection camp, we design a lots of interesting activity including recycle paper to make a picture by sunlight to lecture the kids how precious is the world we live, and at the afternoon we teach them how to make hand sanitizer to insure they realize that our environment is filled of bacteria and we need to wash hands more frequently.

Synthetic Biology Workshop, a feedback from students

The first workshop was centered around providing an introduction to synthetic biology, as the elementary school students were about to embark on a month long synthetic biology unit in their science class. Following a short presentation about the PCR, Transformation, and gene expression, we then asked the students to apply what the learned to manipulate biobrick around our life. Many of the students were very eager and engaged with the activity. In conclusion, We concluded the workshop with a tour of our lab space and a Q&A time, giving the students a chance to ask any questions they had about research or synthetic biology.

Speech to students of other major

To broaden the knowledge of iGEM and synthesis biology to the wider society we decided to start from our university. On June 1st, the final class of the engineering, we share the essence of our project to student from different department. According to their feedback, we realize that productivity ratio should be considered and culture bacteria with bioreactor may be another choice.

Expert

Yesong Gu

Our PI Professor Gu guided me step by step to write a business proposal and contacted with sponsors. Also, he provided me with opportunities to present my idea for our alumni. After a few times of the presentation, our alumni gave me positive and valuable feedback. Besides, he taught us the knowledge of genetic engineering, and let us do the project in his lab. He guided us through the whole project.

Feng-Di Lung.

Professor Lung is from department of chemistry who helped us to design a specific peptide which have the antimicrobial activity , besides, she tauch us how to produce it by the chemical methods (SPPS).

Chuan-Hsiung Chang.

At the beginning of the igem competition, everything was really tough, a lot of unknown. Fortunately, we met this professor who was the first one to join the igem competition in Taiwan, we got so many good recommendations and helps from him. For example, what's the biobrick, how to organize a team ,etc.

Chen Pei-hung

He has dedicated a lot in synthesis biology. Moreover ,we are the first time to group up the iGEM team. Hence, He really helped us a lot .Since the Geographic location, we're always asking him all the problems we faced. For example, he helped us to understand the medal criteria, also taught us how to add a part to the registry.

Meetup

2019 CSMU iGEM

We connect the CSMU iGEM team through Facebook and meet up at the coffee shop between both of our school. Among the meetup, we share the process of our project and ask for the possibility of collaboration. They help us to find out the condition of cell disruption and also taught us how to find the condition easily.

2019 CCU iGEM

We have our first online meetup on April 22. In the whole conversation, we share both of our idea about the rules of iGEM medal, they gave us so much advice about bronze 5 criteria, without them, we could not have had such a solid foundation. We learned a lot from them.

Conference

The Taiwan iGEM Conference 2019 is organized by National Chung Hsing University in central Taiwan, held from August 5th to August 6th. We, TAPG Tung Hai University are the first team represent our university to attend the competition, with passion, we took part in this conference to prepare the competition to Boston. The conference is a platform for teams who are interested in synthetic biology and ready for the competition, gathering teams all over Taiwan, like NCKU, CSMU, etc. The conference is the first step for us to get involve more to the iGEM by exchanging the various ideas and receiving kinds of suggestions.

Besides the nine teams giving presentations, professors also giving speech in the event, they are experienced in academia, for us to absorb the knowledge we never known before. In the conference, teams presented their idea with a 20-minute presentation and poster exhibition, the knowledge and experience exchanging indeed give us new point of view in the better way, people are willing to share ideas and give suggestions. After this event, we are sure that we are a step forward to the competition and knowing the pros and cons of our team. For instance, other teams brought out the point of the market feasibility of our product, makes us to reconsider and rethink about our project. Also, we gain suggestion of peptide side effect from others!

Talking with integrating both academia and industry

We present a presentation to the professor in our school and the industry manager about our project. After the presentation, we were able to get opinions from the audience. Hearing from people working in a different field was a great opportunity for us. Some people gave us ideas of a new product which we never thought of. For example, we ask them questions related to bacteria safety. The manager share with us about how they solve the problem at the factory.

Entrepreneur

Visit chemical engineering alumni

On December 5, we gave a presentation to the alumni from department of chemical engineering who has different place in all walks of life. Many of them was impressed with the technology of biosynthesis and gave huge encourage to the competition. They also remind us to be more creative on the project. Last, we visit unit operation laboratory to know more knowledge about the realistic operation mode not only just stay in the lab.

Biomedicine Innovation and entrepreneurship competition

To obtain more feedback and suggestion, Tunghai iGEM team had participated the biomedicine innovation and entrepreneurship competition. Fortunately, we gain honorable award finally and most of judges mention that the utilize of bacteria should be consider.
