As one of the leaders of the team, Michelle took care of most of the administrative work such as arranging
collaborations with other teams or connecting the team with the school. As part of the bio team, she
participated in lab work but also participated in the school campaign and the middle school education
program.
As one of the two team leaders, Angela was in charge of the communication between the team
instructors and students, relaying the instructors’ advice to the team. She also participated in various
lab work, human practices such as the elementary school education program or the school campaign,
collaboration meetups, and interviews.
As a team co-leader of the biology division, Joshua has primarily been a part of the lab work and the
scientific components of the project, but he has also participated in human practices such as some of
the presentation projects, like the middle school education program, or the school campaign. He has also
been a part of collaboration meetups.
Ji Sue has contributed mainly to human practices, conducting multiple interviews with professors and
designing posters. She took part in the elementary school education program and assisted the middle
school education program. She was also in charge of the logo design process, coordinating with others to
come up with a design.
Youngbo Sohn was in charge of the website part of the project. Youngbo has a lot of experience with web designing and app development, and he used his experience and expertise to work on the framework and contents of the website. He has also contributed to the school campaign, and the prototype design process.
Sunmin Lee mainly participated in the biology portion of the project, taking part in the experiments
frequently. She also participated in other activities relating to human practices like the kindergarten
education program and the school campaign. Furthermore, she took part in interviews with professionals and was
present during the collaboration meetups.
Angela(Eunseok) Kim actively contributed to both the biology and human practices portions of the
project. She was frequently involved in the lab experiments. She also actively participated in the
campaigns and educational presentations, specifically the middle school education program, the school
campaign, and the website design process. Her contributions were crucial in the finalizing of the website.
Wooseok Kim contributed to the iGEM team by mainly focusing on biology labs, human practice activities
like the kindergarten education program or interviews with professionals, collaboration meetups, and
designing the logo. He also worked on the prototype, taking part in Arduino based experiments which
involved making and coding the prototype machine.
Jiho (Jason) Park contributed in the biology laboratory work, and also participated in human practices,
including visits to the kindergarten and elementary school, where he helped share information about the
plastic problem and our project. He also played a crucial role in working on the prototype, where he helped
with building the
model and programming it.
Evan Kim mainly contributed to the Human Practices portion of our project. He actively contributed to
the street campaigns by helping the team create posters and banners to convey information. He also contributed
to the laboratory work and education to some extent.
Moreover, he actively lead the public campaigns, national park and tourist hotel collaborations, and organic
consumer cooperative campaigns.
Mr. Koester, our AP Biology teacher, helped the team understand the mechanisms of our project, and regularly
provided us feedback as to how we could refine our product. His instructions and educational activities
proved essential in the construction of the base foundations of the project. He also provided us access
to the school laboratory in which we could conduct basic experiments such as checking the rate of
plastic degradation.
Our instructor Mr. Song guided us on the majority of biology related processes and provided the team help on
the vast majority of the wet lab procedures, including miniprep, cloning, etc. He also helped the team find
and build the parts that we needed for the project and took charge of explaining the functions of each
component of the product.
Seoyun provided us with a lot of help throughout our campaign processes, giving our team multiple ideas for
venues and activities with her ample experience organizing similar events in college. She assisted us greatly
in executing our campaigns, giving us feedback on poster designs and leading us through multiple examples of
her past work.
As our instructor, Jane guided us through our campaign and aided us in producing content to furnish our
website. With her experiences in college, she helped us organize events and structure our campaign
effectively. In addition, she was also particularly helpful in reviewing our work and refining our writing.
Prof. Ching Taek Han of Sokang University provided the team with a laboratory to work in throughout
summer break, and instructed the procedures of various necessary processes such as cloning the
bacteria during the earlier months of the project.
As the representative of PSI Science Center, Mr. Kim provided the team access to the PSI Science Center
laboratories which the team could access more frequently. He also gave the team basic feedback on how to
improve the
accuracy and precision of our experimental procedure.
Researcher Kim of KAIST university facilitated with the technical aspects of our experiments, such as
explaining how to use various equipment of the laboratory like the spectrophotometer.
Professor Park Young Don of Incheon University explained to the team the properties of plastic and what to
consider in the making of the project, and provided the team with equipment for SEM microscopy and AFM
microscopy which they used to verify the efficacy of our product.
Researcher Yoonki Joo of Yale University helped the team with many technical procedures such as microscopy or
plastic staining.
Johns Hopkins graduate Dongwoo Kim advised the team on the wiring and construction of our prototype device.
Dr. Jim Gerhard was one of the most crucial people to the project. As the High School Principal of Seoul
International School, he had supported iGEM and all the projects and campaigns throughout the preparation
process.
Dr. Uwe Bornscheuer, professor of biotechnology and enzyme
catalysis at the University of Greifswald in Greifswald, Germany, provided great insight on current
research done on the topic of PET-degrading bacteria, the research process involved in the development
of such bacteria, and how close we are to a realistic product.
Dr. Manfred Weiss, former researcher at the Albert-Ludwigs University
of Freiburgs, team leader of the macromolecular crystallography joint research group at Helmholtz
Zentrum Berlin, helped us understand the technology involved in enzyme engineering and the biggest
obstacles to current projects on the topic, and provided us with advice on how our product can be
implemented.
Dr. Gert Weber, researcher/member of the macromolecular
crystallography joint research group at HZB, gave a lot of advice on obstacles, politicians and current
effort, and emphasized the need to achieve a product of a closed cycle in which no side product was
formed.
Dr. Mirónczuk, researcher at the Department of Biotechnology and
Food Microbiology at the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences, gave advice on what
obstacles must be solved/considered when proceeding with our project, and how to solve such issues.
Provided suggestions to creating optimal conditions for our bacteria’s usage.
Dr. Tajkia Syeed Tofa, a researcher working at KTH Royal Institute of
Technology whose expertises are Environmental Nanotechnology, Advanced Oxidation Processes, Microplastic, and
many more areas. Allowed us to get a deeper insight about different methods of degrading plastic
(photodegradation), and enriched the learning experience by questioning us of any other necessary information.
Logo designer Hafizh Pradana provided the team advice on the design of our logo, which the team extensively
took note of in order to improve the aesthetics of their logo. Web designers James Xie, Alexander Melo, and Gihwang Kim greatly helped by giving examples of possibly website layouts and
guiding the team in the construction of our website, providing advice on design elements or coding algorithms.
