We are extremely grateful to anyone who has offered us help during this exciting summer!

Below are the people we should appreciate because of their help.

1. Dr. Xu accompanied us all the time in the lab to ensure our safety.

Dr. Xu Lei provided instruction of the operation of the basic experiments. He accompanied us throughout the experiment, to guide us and to ensure the safety of the experiments. During the whole process, he often mentioned some details of the operation of the experiment, which ensured the success of our experiments.

2. Shu Han discussed the project design with us.

As a senior biomedical engineering doctor, Dr. Han Shu has rich experiences in genetic engineering. During the experiments, she often discussed with us the experimental scheme and guided us to optimize the subject. She also taught us how to organize data, to draw tables, to analyze and to discuss so that articles could be presented in a professional form.

3. Xuanyi Zhu taught general lessons about synthetic biology for more than a month.

Xuanyi Zhu introduced to us some basic information of the competition at the beginning, including competition process, key time nodes, materials to be submitted, etc., and taught us the basic knowledge of synthetic biology and genetic engineering. During the experiment, he followed up to make sure we did the experiment safely.

4. Professor Luning Zhang taught writing courses and checked our grammar on wiki

Professor Luning Zhang is an expert in physical chemistry with strong research experiences. In this project, he mainly taught us English academic writing and helped us to check the grammatical errors of our articles. He paid close attention to the progress of the project, often reminding us of things we need to do.

5. Professor Wenwei Ren led us to think about the production of squalene in factories.

After interviewing and discussing our project with him, as an university professor who had also experiences to instruct students to conduct scientific research, Professor Ren suggested us to combine our project with the society more closely, including industrialization and publicity.

6. Jiakang Chen from ShanghaiTech University did GC-MS for us.

Jiakang Chen specializes in detecting and analyzing organic compounds. With his help, we worked out the best reaction conditions for squalene detection by GC-MS, which enabled us to accurately describe the actual squalene yield.

7. Based on our idea of shark protection, Professor Youjia Hu led us to analyze the possibility and method of squalene synthesis. He also reminded us that the bioreactor for the synthesis of squalene is a good platform for the synthesis of terpenes, enabling us to realize that our experimental results can be further developed. In addition, Professor Hu also reviewed and corrected our parts and experiment design.

8. Gary Huang encouraged us to apply Problem Based Learning in the whole project. We employed this learning method throughout the project.

9 Maggie Wang followed up and recorded the basic teaching process, and put forward suggestions for revision.
