2014 Kyoto iGEM team had done the similar project, produce DMS to increase the amount of cloud. In their project, they used DMSP-dependent pathway from marine creature like diatoms and corals then through the marine bacteria. The route they used was through Met- DimethylSulfidePropionate (DMSP) -DMS, but enzymes in the intermediate reaction were unknown. So they found some similar genes tried to complete the route into E. coli.
Their thought we think is great but the route is too complicated to do well into E. coli and needs to consume more energy. So we found a shorten pathway, DMSP-independent pathway, in soil bacteria, Pseudomonas deceptionensis. This pathway also start from Met but through two steps that DMS can produce. It’s more simply and use the less energy to achieve the goal.
