Human Practices

The success of our human practices includes the recommendation and review from professionals. Before kicking off of the project, we have several meetup with Professor Kwan Hoi Shan from CUHK, in which he agrees there is a need in testing the probiotic concentration in commercial products so that consumers could make better decision from informed and precise information. Another visit to Professor Kwan after the experiment part of our project suggested that our design to check for the probiotic food sample is practicable and innovative. This testing method is fast, accurate, specific and effective.

We also have several sharings to the public to introduce our innovative probiotic testing method targeting for commercial products. These sharing occasions including ranging from radio broadcast to internal school sharing, so as to introduce this innovative technique to the public.Details are shown below and on the Education and Engagementpage.

Meetup with Professor KWAN, Hoi Shan

Professor Kwan is an expert in microbiology and in food safety. During the academic year 2018-2019, three of our IGEM team members, WANG Chengbiao, WONG Kam Pong, and CHEUNG Man Hin, had the opportunity to interview Professor Kwan at the Chinese University of Hong Kong through the Young Scientists Mentorship Programme, and discussed the direction of research. During this year, Professor Kwan kindly mentored us, and he inspired us a lot. We discussed the aim and the impact of our project, the procedures of experiments, and the results. Professor Kwan shared lots of information about probiotics and provided support to our team, and we became more confident and determined to start this iGEM project.

After the experiment stage, we had another meetup with Professor Kwan. This meet up with Professor Kwan after the completion of web lab part affirmed our idea to check for the concentration of probiotic bacteria. He also brought us the limitation and the follow up of this project. All these are important in fine tuning our project later on.

Idea exchange with the HKU iGEM Team

We met with the IGEM team from the University of Hong Kong (HKU). HKU team visited our school. Apart from teaching us some advanced and updated DNA nanotechnology, they also shared their research ideas. In return, we introduced our previous projects related to nanotechnology. They also shared their experience in participating previous iGEM competitions, and gave us useful advice.

Joint School Science Competition

Our teammates had visited the Joint School Science Exhibition (JSSE), one of the most important local competitions. Since the HKU iGEM team had set up a booth there, we met them there in order to share each other’s progress and further discuss our works. The HKU iGEM team had also invited us to set up a pull-up banner about our iGEM project in their booth.
