Safety in the laboratory
iGEM GIFU_TOKAI aims to the top-class of guarantee safety in the experiments. Before our experiments started, all of the members of iGEM GIFU TOKAI took a lecture from Prof.IWAHASHI. The presentation file used in the lecture can be downloaded here (http://www.abios.gifu-u.ac.jp/h1884/file/3b07682dbbb16a724cc6f72715726718.pdf) Not only in the lecture, but also in the meeting, We often receive advice from our teacher, graduate students. So we can review and improve our method and environment of the laboratory for the safe experiments. We were cautious about our protectors this year since we treated with RNA and some chemicals which may cause some injuries such as formamide. We always wore lab coats, gloves to prevent contamination of RNase and protect ourselves.
Biosafety
In the university duty, all of the experimenters must take a qualification by learning about Cartagena law（" Law Concerning the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biological Diversity through Regulations on the Use of Living Modified Organisms"）of Japan. Members of iGEM GIFU TOKAI took the lecture of the Law and also studied the biosafety independently to comprehend how we should treat DNA. Even, we did not use any organisms in an assay. It is indispensable for all of Synthetic Biologists to learn the ethics of DNA recombination.
