Collaborations

St Andrews: Microbiome of the UK

We had the pleasure to collaborate with the St. Andrews’ team on the Microbiome of the UK project.

In collaboration with St. Andrews University’s iGEM team, we helped host 2 events in Edinburgh, one at Currie Primary school, and one at the Edinburgh Zoo, aimed at sharing synthetic biology with primary aged children. You can find out more about St. Andrew’s Education initiative here.

Our soil sample was sent to St. Andrews along with 8 other UK universities within the same week, where it is now being analysed to give a picture of the bacterial soil content across the UK.

This project was previously initiated by the St. Andrews University iGEM team and brought to our attention during our Scottish Meetup with the Edinburgh Overgraduate and St. Andrews teams.

Macau: Scottish Meet-up

On the 6th July we had the pleasure to meet with the High School Macau Team, Along with the Edinburgh Overgraduate Team, we were all able to share project ideas and gain insight into their projects. As we were both using GFP reporter assays, this was a topic we both gained from discussing.

US AFRL: Youtube Series

We collaborated with US AFRL Carroll High School to give feedback on thier ‘How To Wiki’ Youtube series and WIKI guide pack for future iGEM teams. As we do not have anyone with web development experience on our team, we were excited to help future iGEM teams who might be in the same position that we found ourselves in when building the WIKI.

Newcastle: UK wide meetup

On the 30th-31st July we were able to travel to Newcastle to attend the UK meetup. Here we planned out our Microbiome of Scotland project with the other UK teams. All teams presented their projects so far and also participated in poster displays at the Designer Biology Symposium, which was taking place in parallel at Newcastle University.

It was a great chance to practice our presentation skills, find out about the huge diversity in projects across the UK teams and ofcourse make some fellow iGEMer friends!

Particular highlights were:

  • Speaking with Exeter University Team on CAD files and 3D printing, which helped us in our hydrolyte design as their team had heavy experience in this.
  • Being able to further our Human Integrated Practices by discussing our hydrogen project with the UK Defence Agency, present at the symposium. We were particularly enlightened by their safety concerns and views on biohydrogen.

Chinese University of Hong Kong: a meeting

On the 1st of August in Edinburgh, one of our team mates, Ola, met with Jade Liu from the iGEM team of Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). They discussed what our projects are about and tried to find ways for our teams to potentially help out each other. We signposted their team for modelling - we recommended them to reach out to St. Andrews iGEM team for dynamic modelling advice and explained to them how constraint-based modelling works in case they would find it useful. They were also offered help by us in learning how to program in Python. The CUHK team offered to do wet lab measurements for us in September (because we expected to have no lab space after the end of August).

Edinburgh Overgradute: Remedye

A fellow University of Edinburgh team, Remedye, made up of overgraduates collaborated with us throughout the summer. They mentored us on our lab skills and techniques as, for some team members, it was our first time working in a wet lab environment! In addition, we held bi-weekly presentation sessions, where each team would present where they were in their respective projects. This gave us a chance to provide them a fresh perspective on their work, while also gaining feedback and advice on certain aspects of our project. We also co-hosted meet-ups for the Macau and St Andrew 2019 iGEM teams. It was a wonderful opportunity for both of our teams to share this experience with others who were going through the same processes in iGEM.
