Special Prize Best Plant Synthetic Biology Project

Gold medal and Special Prize for Best Plant Synthetic Biology

We happily announce our project was awarded Gold! To be awarded a medal in the iGEM competition, teams must meet a set of criteria for each level, Bronze, Silver and Gold. These are cumulative across the levels, so to win a Gold medal all criteria from Bronze and Silver, additionally to the Gold standards have to be met. Since it takes convincing the judges of fulfilment of all tasks, medals directly express how judges hold the project in estimation.

As we were the first team of Humboldt University to take part in iGEM and our resources were limited, we did not expect to have high chances of winning a trophy. To our surprise the judges rewarded our work with the Special Prize for Best Plant Synthetic Biology, an award which is meant to highlight exemplary work done in plant synthetic biology. Since this prize is awarded to only one team in each section of competitors, the High School, Undergrad and Overgrad section, we were all the more proud to be considered as winners in this category. Although C. reinhardtii is not defined as a plant, its characteristics as a photosynthetic organism and plant-like organelles make it a suitable organism for plant researchers to gain a better understanding of processes like photosynthesis or chlorophyll synthesis pathways.

Our Achievements:

Three Main Achievements

  • MoClo-Cloning-Toolkit for Chlamy: Codon optimized parts, smaller easier to transform backbone vector (can be co-transformed as well), RFC[10] compatible parts in iGEM Type IIS standard & easy-assembly ready
  • Chlamy measurements in a bioreactor, data for growthunder comparative growth conditions & development of our own reactor set-up
  • Direct dialogue with stakeholders forming bonds for long-term application cooperations
