Integrated Human Practices

It is most important for our team to make an impact in our community, not only inside the university but also in areas outside of it. We are achieving this by preparing our team members in different aspects and reaching out so we can share our knowledge. Our efforts include academic, social, political, and industry outreach to lay the groundwork for the development of Synthetic Biology in Puerto Rico.

Synthetic Biology and Possible Agricultural Applications Survey and Statistics

Surveys were conducted in order to acquire a perspective of the general public’s knowledge on Synthetic Biology and agricultural aspects related to this science. These were given to farmers that were participating in the agricultural fair “5 Días con Nuestra Tierra” at the University of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez Campus and the general community at a public event. This information was used for both the design and possible applications for the prototype and to have a clear idea of what kind of topics were needed to be prioritized in our educational outreach.

Public Policy and Bioethics Interviews

Hoping to learn about the point of views of Doctors in Philosophy of different areas at the UPRM, we design a guide of questions that explored their perspectives on topics related to Synthetic Biology in Puerto Rico. The interviewees had a low/moderate level of understanding of the emerging science, resulting on genuinely first-impression responses on ethics issues regarding Synthetic Biology.

PROBETA Town Hall 2019

Was to foster a productive conversation between Puerto Rico's scientific community involved in the field of Synthetic Biology, biosciences industry leaders and local lawmakers of the Government of Puerto Rico. For this event, our main focus consisted of promoting how Synthetic Biology could lead to economic and technological advancement, and present the attendees with current local and federal guidelines concerning the ethical development of this science. Our Team also proposed different guidelines to lead Puerto Rico on the tack of sustainable development using Synthetic Biology as a tool.

Field Visits

Different field visits to PRABIA, Vesan Group and the MSRC were conducted to investigate the scientific and research community so the team could give the project direction. These gave us an insight of Puerto Rico’s different companies and groups, their fields and work, which allowed us to shape our project, education and public engagement.
