Safety

Overview
Our bacteria will be engineered to detect contaminants, as nitrate and heavy metals, being an useful and quick tool to identify the presence of these dangerous compounds in soil, water or food.

Possible Risks
We have used Escherichia Coli Top 10 competent cells that are from risk group 1 because they do not cause disease in healthy adult humans. The risks could be associated with a release to the environment of the transformed bacteria or the heavy metals used in the assays. Our project could be used in biotechnological factories or laboratories. In that case, the factories must meet the requirements of the European and Spanish GMO legislation to ensure that this particular use takes place in safe conditions.

Managing the Risks
In the Public University of Navarre there is a Work Security and Health Management Department, who is responsible for the compliance of all safety and security regulations in our institution. They instructed our team about general risks and ways of tackling different situations in the lab.

As our team is working in biosafety cabinets to reach a sterile work space, our lab belongs to Level 1, Low Risk.
