OUR PROJECT

The A.D.N. (Airborne Detector for Nucleic acids) was conceived to be a user-friendly portable airborne pathogen detector meant to improve air quality monitoring in various settings including hospitals and agri-food industries. The device’s operating mode relies on microfluidics-based nucleic acid extraction, and detection of target sequences by molecular sensors. The sensors are based on the riboregulator system, more specifically on the toehold switches technology, which provides specificity.

DESIGN

Developing a solution to such problem implicates working on a molecular tool for diagnosis, as well as linked extraction and detection devices, microfluidics for a standardized reaction, and RNA switch design software : everything to make the user at ease and safe.

Designing our molecular tool with the help of structure prediction is an essential step to verify the stability

of both the structure itself and the action the target has on the unfolding.

HARDWARE/SOFTWARE

To allow for all-in-one sampling, extraction, reaction and detection we paired microfluidics and RNA design with consideration of structure folding.

By integrating modeling feedback, diverse technical expertise, ethical considerations, and compared societal impact, we aim to validate our problem approach as well as developed solution.

COLLABORATIONS

This year we tried to experience all the possible aspects of this competition, going from data analysis exchange to artistic interpretations of the relationships between humans and synthetic biology.
