1. Background
(1) Invasion of Mikania micrantha

Plant invasion is a common phenomenon all over the world, but plant invasion has been less concerned than animal invasion. After a series of investigations and interviews, it is concluded that plants do not have the strong mobility than animals, and under normal circumstances, most places that were invaded were green belt, forest land, etc., which had no great impact on people's life, or even can not cause people's attention. At the same time, most of the invasive plants are as green as the native plants, but they show more vitality and even gain more favor. Based on the above, invasive plants had always been subverters of the urban ecosystem, but for various reasons escaped the attention of most people and continued to destroy the urban ecosystem with impunity.

Take Mikania micrantha for example. Mikania micrantha is a perennial herb or shrubby climbing vine of the composite family, smooth to pilose, native to south and Central America, and now widely spread to tropical Asia. Mikania micrantha appeared as a weed in Hong Kong, China around 1919 and was discovered in Shenzhen in 1984. Since 2008, Mikania micrantha had been widely distributed in the pearl river delta region. The species is listed as one of the world's 100 most harmful invasive species. Also listed as China's first foreign invasive species.

Due to the invasion of Mikania micrantha, more and more soil area was invaded by Mikania micrantha in the wild woodland and urban greening environment. Most of the time people did not know Mikania micrantha well enough to accurately distinguish it from other plants, people only paid attention to the green, ignored the persecution of Mikania micrantha caused to the ecological environment under this protective color. This is one of the reasons Mikania micrantha is so prevalent.

(2) Current situation

The biggest reason that Mikania micrantha and other invasive plants can be so rampant is the public neglect of such plants, or they were even lack of awareness of invasive plants as a special biological invasion phenomenon, without the relevant vigilance and prevention awareness. Current top priority is to make the public notice Mikania micrantha, which gradually formed in the mind a concept ----invasion plants, when the public has a common awareness and consciousness, they can easily united to protect the ecological environment, meanwhile the pubic can form a sustainable against invading plant's environmental protection consciousness.

SZU-China iGEM team developed an applet which named ‘GREEN Hunter’ that can identify and locate Mikania micrantha based on WeChat platform. Through this applet we want to popularize some knowledge about Mikania micrantha, so that the public can have a deeper understanding of Mikania micrantha, which is called "plant killer".

Since WeChat has a very high penetration rate in China, GREEN Hunter developed by relying on WeChat can make use of the advantages of WeChat, so that more people can learn relevant knowledge more quickly, and solve the difficulties of people in identifying Mikania micrantha, and save the time of downloading APP. Crucially, users in the use of the GREEN Hunter for Mikania micrantha identification in the process of positioning can be saved, we can draw a roughly Mikania micrantha map according to the save location in the backend, this map can give the distribution of Mikania micrantha and provide relevant information to removal activities for individual or organization, also it can provide certain data to support government organised Mikania micrantha elimination activities.

2.Introduction

The applet (GREEN Hunter) we designed is mainly divided into three pages.

The first page is our home page and the most feature-focused part, which we can call the Map page (as the Fig3 shows)

On the Map page, we can identify Mikania micrantha, and a result will be returned after identification, including plant name and fit degree. After confirming the plant is Mikania micrantha, we can click "ok" to save. After saving and refreshing the Map page, a new pair of coordinates icon will appear. This page can also position the current position and show or hide the coordinates.

The second page is Introduction page of our team (as the Fig4 shows), including our slogan image, project introduction and team introduction. We can click on the corresponding introduction card to view our detailed text description.

The third page is Personal page (as the Fig5 shows), where you can view the coordinates that you have currently positioned and can delete them according to your needs.

4. Development solution
  • Front end: WeChat small program developer tool 2.8.1
  • The backend: Python3.6 + Django2.0.0
  • Deploy: Nginx + Centos
  • UI design: Refer to the UI design rules of UI China
5. Results

To promote the use of our little program, we organized an event called "Fight GREEN For More Green". In this activity, we cooperated with the Volunteer Union of Shenzhen University to organize volunteers to locate and eliminate Mikania micrantha in Lihu Campus of Shenzhen University. We narrated the public about the harm of Mikania micrantha and organized them to locate and remove Mikania micrantha on campus. We verified the feasibility of our applet through this activity, and got a lot coordinate points on the backend. (lick to PE & Edu to see more)

Our applet is used in a wider range of application with the further promotion, more and more public groups participate in using our applet, including teachers and parents. with the help of some related activities of Mikania micrantha sanitizers and positioning. Through these activities, we can not only gain a lot data to support drawing the map of Mikania micrantha invasion, but also made great contributions to protect the real green word. 6. Prospect

(1) In the future, we hope to develop an automatic Mikania micrantha spray device with route planning algorithm based on existing UAV technology by combining Mikania micrantha distribution map which drawn by us with UAV. After completing the device, we can directly use the coordinate points data which obtained by our applet and the UAV to directly realize the full automation of spraying.

(2) We has carried on the map of Mikania micrantha invasion to the positioning of the drawing plan just in one of Shenzhen University campus , and we are going to continuing promoting this map designated drawing plan to the public, cooperating with volunteers and community organizations to carry out the relevant Mikania micrantha elimination activity, through the whole activity, let the public more intuitive understanding of Mikania micrantha, damage to the environment, at the same time, we can complete map of Mikania micrantha invasion together.

(3) At present, our applet is only aimed at Mikania micrantha. However, this platform has implanted a concept of "invasive plants seriously damage the environment" to the public. The public can deepen their understanding of invasive plants through this platform and develop more environmental protection measures. So, when we face other kinds of invasive plants we can use this method to govern.

The specific idea is as follows: public education -- identification of invasive plants -- location of invasive plants -- mapping of relevant invasion sites. Along this idea, a series of activities will be carried out to help people in different areas better identify and remove the invasive plants around them, protect the surrounding environment, and support the real green!
