We envisioned DIANE as an iGEM project and as a start-up company. We sought guidance and collaborated with DeepTech Founders which helps entrepreneurial scientists to accelerate their startups. We have carried out a market study to identify our competitors or partners. We took inspiration from Agile Methodology to elaborate our business plan with short iterations to minimize the risk of project failure. By involving potential customers and experts (hospital and field medicine physicians, manufacturers, French Government regulators), we ensured compliance to the highest scientific standards, market expectations, and regulatory requirements. To establish financial stability, we made presentations to investors and were able to convince them of the viability of our project. We carried out a crowdfunding and partnerships to raise 32,000 USD. In collaboration with the legal department of the Institut Pasteur, we have considered the protection of DIANE’s intellectual property.

Education & Public Engagement

Spreading our knowledge is key for our project. Over two days, we explained antibiotic resistance to four middle school classes at the Collège Germaine de Staël with talks and videos. Our team was invited to the Cité des Sciences, the biggest science museum in Europe, to present our project and raise awareness about antibiotic resistance for a week end. We also presented DIANE to the PhD students from other units in the Institut Pasteur, and to researchers in biology at the YRLS (Young Researchers in Life Sciences) congress. Also, we tabled our project to a conference and a round table “Startup H+ for good” about ethics and transhumanism at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (the National Library of France).

Best integrated Human practices

The value of our project lies in how well it answers patients’ needs. At every step of its development we performed multiple measurements, interviewed experts, and presented at international conferences and to the potential users of our device. We interviewed an internationally recognized expert in genetics and biochemistry of antibiotic resistance (Pr. P. Courvalin), a member of the French Ministry of Health (Dr. S. Renard-Dubois, DGOS) who works on strategies in public health to prevent the expansion of antibiotic resistance. Doctors in hospitals (Dr. D. Lebeaux), or in in humanitarian field conditions (Dr. P. Clauteaux, Venezuela) also provided us with feedback. We worked with a professional designer to adapt the materials and the portability of our device. This combinatorial approach made us realize how important it is to develop the most relevant device.
