Our Team

Steven Ionov

Steven, the Team Leader, graduated from NYU in May with a Dual Degree in Biology and Chemical Engineering and will be starting his PhD in Bioengineering at Dartmouth in the fall. He wants to make sure that NYU students have the opportunity to conduct their own research, and is excited to see the progress that iGEM makes in the future. When not in the lab, he plays classical piano, and is passionate about hiking and fishing.

Kaavya Ashok

Kaavya is one of the team’s leaders and is on the gene circuit team, specializing in wet lab work. She also mobilizes team collaborations. Kaavya graduated NYU in May with a degree in Biology. She joined because she is passionate about synthetic biology and she believes that it can be harnessed to solve a wide range of the world’s problems. Outside of iGEM, she is passionate about science memes and parodies, anime, K-pop, J-pop, social justice, bubble tea, singing, public health (particularly toilet access), and her dog Giorgio. Fun fact: she speaks Mandarin.

Kelly Huang

Kelly is a senior studying biotechnology and one of the team’s founding members and leaders. While most of her work has been at the lab bench assembling the gene circuit, she was also heavily involved in the team’s entrepreneurial efforts. She joined iGEM because it was a unique opportunity to work on a project that was entirely designed and carried out by undergraduates. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, traveling, and trying new food.

Malini Basu

Malini is a senior majoring in Biomolecular Science. She is on the gene circuitry team and primarily works in the wet lab. She joined the team because the experience of working on a project of interest in a mostly student-run lab seemed like an amazing experience she wouldn’t have been able to find anywhere else. Outside of the lab, she is an Indian classical dancer and a student pilot.

Adler Guerrero

Adler is a junior majoring in Biology with minors in Physics and Mathematics. He is on the gene circuit team where he mainly helps out with wet lab techniques. Adler joined iGEM because he believes there is much potential to a lab run by undergraduate students. Outside of iGEM, Adler researchers brain tumor morphology and genetic/epigenetic changes along with making a stem cell model of high grade brain cancer. Outside of research, Adler is the president of a science club, a TA for science courses, part of the scholars at NYU's College of Arts and Sciences, but most importantly he’s a fish enthusiast.

Ali Hasan

Ali is a senior majoring in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. He is on the bioreactor team. Ali joined NYU iGEM because of the opportunity to work on a student-run project involving the cutting edge science of synthetic biology. In his free time, he enjoys watcing and playing football, tennis, and basketball. His favorite football team is the NY Giants and his favorite basketball team is the San Antonio Spurs.

Michelle Lam

Michelle is a senior studying Biomolecular Science. She is on the gene circuit team and social media team where she enjoys documenting the lab work with emojis🔬🧪🧬. Michelle joined iGEM because she enjoys working on student led projects that they come up with themselves! Fun fact: Michelle has an identical twin that iGEM members have mistaken her for in the hallway of Tandon! In her free time Michelle is currently training to run a marathon with her siblings this coming January.😁

Neelam Pandya

Neelam is a sophomore studying Chemistry with minors in Computer Science and Spanish. She primarily works on the gene circuit team while also contributing to the wiki design. Neelam joined iGEM to learn about synthetic biology applications and enjoys working with a student-led team of talented, like-minded individuals. In her free time, Neelam often hunts for new books to read and new eateries to try around the city.

David Sung

David is a senior pursuing a dual degree in Chemistry and Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering with a joint minor in Mathematics and Computer Science. He is a part of the bioreactor team. David joined the iGEM team, because he believes that a student-led lab offers a unique opportunity to explore ideas independently and promote collaboration between peers. In his free time, he likes to explore around the city and try new food.
