Screening System Works
After washing off the unbinding heptanal molecules from papers immobilized with mOR103-15 and fluorescent proteins with water, we send the water samples to the Proteomics Research Center of our school so that they can use mass spectrometer to measure the amount of heptanal in the water samples. We expect that the amount of heptanal in experimental group (that is, the water used to wash the papers immobilized with mOR103-15) will be less than that in control group. (the water used to wash the papers immobilized with fluorescent protein)The below image is the mass spectrum of heptanal by using electron ionization method.
EI is one of the first method used for mass spectrometry, and it is still widely used now. The analyte used in EI must be volatile and thermally stable. Though this technique is applicable to the substance whose molecular weight is below 1000Da, the compound is more suitable if its MW is less than 600Da. The principle of EI is that energetic electrons collide with the analyte to expel electrons from it, producing a positive molecular ion.
Prototype
The test paper above mentioned is later used in our product. By cutting an edge in a straw, we can easily stuck the test paper on it. Next, we simply covered it by the models we design, including the rubber balloon, the heat sensitive plastic bag, and we can even simply turn our test paper into a straw with the protein coated on the inner side. More details of our product are written in our Hardware page.
