Glossary

Homepage:

Computational: relating to or using computers
Reverse transcriptase: an enzyme that catalyzes the formation of DNA from an RNA template in reverse transcription
Beta recombinase: catalyzes site-specific recombination
Sequencing: determining the order of nucleotides in the DNA
Nuclease: an enzyme that cleaves the chains of nucleotides in nucleic acids into smaller units
Wild type: typical/normal form as it occurs in nature

Description:

Biosensor: a device which uses a living organism or biological molecules to detect the presence of chemicals.
Chromosome: the main circular genetic part of the bacterial
Inducible promoters: promoters that can be regulated in the presence of certain factors
Okazaki fragments: short sequences of DNA nucleotides which are synthesized during lagging strand synthesis

Design:

Induce: Gene activation by a molecule
Selected resistance: Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria develop the ability to defeat the drugs designed to kill them
IPTG: IPTG mimics allolactose and triggers transcription of the lac operon
Reverse transcriptase: an enzyme that catalyzes the formation of DNA from an RNA template in reverse transcription
Beta recombinase protein: catalyzes site-specific recombination
Amplified: increase in frequency of a gene or chromosomal region
Plasmid: small DNA molecule within a cell that is physically separated from chromosomal DNA and can replicate independently
Circular Polymerase Extension Cloning: method used to assemble and clone multiple inserts into a vector in a single step
PCR amplification: is the selective amplification of DNA or RNA targets using the polymerase chain reaction
Transformed: genetic alteration of a cell resulting from the direct uptake and incorporation of genetic material from its surroundings
Primer: short fragments of single stranded DNA that are complementary to DNA sequences that flank the target region of interest
Double stranded breaks: when both strands of the DNA duplex are severed
