About the Alma 2019 iGEM Program
We are very excited to be fielding a team this year. The interdisciplinary nature of iGEM makes it a great fit for a liberal arts college like Alma. At Alma, iGEM has been integrated into the Biochemistry Major and Biotechnology Minor including a Journal Club, Molecular Genetics, and a spring course dedicated entirely to iGEM. This allows synergy between what the students do in class and how they pursue iGEM outside of class - integrating iGEM is a great way to make the above courses interdisciplinary.
This year, our team included students from multiple years, with majors from departments across Biochemistry, Chemistry, Math, New Media Studies, and more.
This year (2019) we earned a silver-medal! This was the best result in all of Michigan, and equal best in the whole Midwest region! We are proud of our work, grateful to the judges, and would also like to applaud all our neighbor institutions that also carried out impressive work in synthetic biology!
