My name is Setti Belhouari. I am a fourth-year biochemistry student at the University of Ottawa. During my third year of working for uOttawa iGEM, I assist the team to develop a plasmid library which expedites cloning in both E. coli and S. cerevisiae. My job consists mainly of providing technical guidance and moral support to the undergraduate team of aspiring scientists, whilst ensuring the continuity of the team's succes in future years. I am fascinated by mathematics and poetry. I am also a passionate advocate for accessibility in science-- a passion which is apparent in this year's project. Fun fact: my favorite Shakespearean character is Macbeth.
My name is Taylor Lanosky and I am going into my second year of Biotechnology at the University of Ottawa. This is my second summer with iGEM and I am working on making our current biobricks compatible with Type IIS assembly. Apart from iGEM, I am a world class jump roper and enjoy rugby, dramatic arts, the outdoors and more. Similar to my fellow teammates, I am well-rounded individual who is excited to use iGEM as a platform to make a positive difference in society today using synthetic biology.
My name is Emily and I'm a third year biochemistry student. This is my second year with the uOttawa iGEM team and I'm really excited to be back! This year, I've been tasked with optimizing the standard restriction, ligation, and transformation protocols to help develop our toolkit. When I'm not in the lab, you can usually find me playing games, watching movies, or hiking.
My name is Iris Samputu and I’m going into my fourth year of Biotechnology /
Chemical Engineering. This is my first year with iGEM and I am responsible for
overseeing the efficacy of our toolkit. As such, I will be maintaining close relations
with local schools and I will be coordinating various outreach programs. I am a huge
fan of painting, swimming, and learning about entrepreneurial start-ups. I
am also a firm believer in social activism, with specific passion for animal
rights and Black Lives Matter.
Hi, my name is George Liu and I’m a third year Biomedical Science student at the University of Ottawa. This is my first year with the iGEM team and my task is to optimize the Gibson Assembly protocol. I am also trying to pioneer an open-source DIY Gibson Master Mix, which would make the usually-expensive technique accessible for smaller research operations. Furthermore, I have taken on various roles within Sponsorship and Graphic Design for the team. Outside of the lab, I am a firm believer of personal fitness and living an active lifestyle. I love everything outdoors, particularly hikes, kayaking, fishing, and running!
Hi! I am Miléna Sokolowski, a third-year student majoring in Mathematics with a minor in Music. This summer will be my first year with iGEM! I am mainly involved in the dry lab, so I will be producing the mathematical and data models for the team. I am also developing software to allow automatic determination of homology sites. I love music and visual arts; so you would often find me painting, playing guitar or piano and drawing. I am very enthusiastic about the growing interdisciplinary between mathematics, art and science(STEAM). I’m very excited about the project this year!
Hey, my name is Victoria Feng and I’m a third year Biomedical Science
student. This is my first year partaking in iGEM. Gaining exposure to the synthetic biology community is also a first for me. It developed my interests in
protein engineering of enzymes that have the potential to solve global issues such as organ donation. My current lab work focuses on verifying the presence of inserts and transforming yeast plasmids. You will most likely catch me eating, reading, and writing (short stories and novels) in my free time.
