It took about one year of engaging with Synthetic Biology to create iGEM Thessaly; the first interdisciplinary team from the University of Thessaly participating in iGEM. On this page, we are going to share the steps we followed during our effort, with the hope to motivate future generations to get involved in educational experiences like this.
Our steps
January 2018
The Greek infrastructure for Synthetic Biology, Omic-Engine, is formed and launches research projects from labs all over Greece.
October – December 2018
Members of our team attend the Synthetic Biology course that is taught for the first time at an undergraduate level in Greece, at the Department of Biochemistry & Biotechnology, University of Thessaly.
June 2018
Our project leaders have the first meeting with our PIs to share with them their desire to create iGEM Thessaly 2019.
July 2018
Members of our team attend the SynBio Workshop held by iGEM Athens and iGEM Thessaloniki 2018.
September 2018
Our project leaders reach to different departments of our University to present the iGEM competition to the Academic community and begin the recruitment.
November 2018
The first interdisciplinary team from the University of Thessaly is formed and ready to start working. The first team meeting takes place at the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology in the city of Larissa, Thessaly.
December 2018
During our brainstorming phase, more than 60 ideas came up. We start building our fundraising strategy and begin the Education & Public Engagement activities.
January 2019
We finally choose our project which is the development of a new test for the diagnosis of Tuberculosis which will be applied in refugee camps in Greece. At that time, we launch our official website igem-thessaly.uth.gr.
January – March 2019
We are working on our project development and starting interactions with various stakeholders for our Integrated Human Practices.
March 2019
Our project reveal takes place at the Department of Biochemistry & Biotechnology in order to receive feedback and redesign our project.
April 2019
We continue building on our project design and our Dry Lab starts working on the modeling part of our project.
May 2019
Our Wet Lab members begin their training into our collaborating laboratories while our wiki development and graphic design start working.
June 2019
The project experimental design is fully developed while more Human Practices activities are conducted.
July 2019
Our Wet Lab experiments officially begin with our product development brainstorming taking place alongside. We host the First Greek Meet Up at our University getting the opportunity to meet our fellow iGEMers.
August 2019
We start documenting our wiki inspired by previous iGEM teams’ work.
September 2019
Our experiments are finalized and our parts documented in the Registry Pages. We visit the Refugee Accommodation Center “Agia Eleni” in Ioannina to demonstrate our product design.
October 2019
We finalize our wiki documentation and prepare our oral presentation & poster for the Giant Jamboree.
